Is there an auto search for creating links?

I am in the lengthy process of adding in all the 'official' info for the realm I am using into Realm Works. In this process I am adding material that is referenced in material I created earlier. Now I know that when adding or changing some material links are created when you hit save.
But what I want to know is; Do I have to go into each section and change something and save it just so the links will get created or is there an easier way that will automatically search the entire realm for possible links?

I would think yes but as of yet I have not been able to find any "Find all links" function.

No, there is (as yet) no way to scan the entire realm for content links. The best you can do is rescan individual Topics/Articles.

I've found that creating "stubs" for content as I go works best (for me). I make liberal use of CTRL-Q. Ideally, I create cities, then regions, then NPC's, then businesses, then adventures with a focus on creating a skeleton that I then go back and add details to. Realistically, I get bored doing the same type over and over and over so I skip around or create details before I have the infrastructure in place and then periodically go through older entries and add-space-delete-space-save which forces a scan.

I'm looking forward to a global rescan but it probably cannot be implemented until we can create black lists of words not to attempt to link and perhaps even white lists of what the preferred link is when there are multiple valid choices.

I wish I had followed the approach that AEIOU describes, but I'm generally focusing on getting ready for a game session adding in larger elements as they are needed as part of game prep. Also, I want to capture information as I think of it and I often get inspired to write in great detail on a specific topic.

Hopefully, in the future, there will be an option to universally update links.

Yeah having an option to universally update links is pretty necessary once you get past a handful of entries.

We seriously need to be careful what we wish for.... Universal updating is not a silver bullet.

I have some entries that have quite literally 200+ links for location or NPC summaries. They take FOREVER to click through when I do a lot of updates by adding in sections of cities or groups of NPCs. And that is only one entry. I cannot even imagine how long it would take to do 1000+ entries of searching and linking.

I agree it's not a silver bullet, but it's a useful and necessary tool, I would say. Maybe if you could decide whether you wanted to clear existing links and rescan everything, or just have it scan for new links and not change any existing ones? That way you could do a big sweep once in a while, and use the smaller sweep more frequently.

I'd like to be able to create a Topic View and scan for new links only in those entries. It's definitely necessary but I honestly fear clicking that button the first time and spending sooooo muuuuuuch time clicking through each entry.

Please institute black/white lists at the same time so we can be selective in what is linkable.

I'd definitely agree with this. I've actually started putting the "@" symbol in front of topic names to prevent links I don't normally want. For example, my topic @Goblins in the monster list is that way because for some reason, the word "Goblins" comes up frequently in text descriptions. I tend to be one the "accept all links" kind of people but I really don't want every "goblin" to link to the other topic and I don't want to have to spend the time skipping each possible link.

Just had a thought. In a Wikipedia entry, only the first time that a word or phrase has it's own entry is that word or phrase an actual hyperlink.

Could RW be automated the same? Within each topic or article naturally... :)

That's a great idea! But there also has to be a way to create a topic and not have it listed as a possible link.

But honestly the most important thing to me that is missing is the calendar function. Every game world I use has a specific calendar that is not aligned with the Gregorian calendar. There are different days of the weeks, months, special festivals and so on. But that's another story....

Having only the first instance link could work. One you have it linked, it also appears in the list of linked content on the right panel.

I made the mistake of creating an article on "time" that has game-mechanics rules on time. Now I'm thinking I need to go back and rename it to "time rules" or something. I have a lot of mechanics articles that lead to over-linking.

ha, that's nothing. One of the stats I use is called Insight and the alias for it is "In".... so every instance of "in" asks for a link!!!!!

That would drive me nuts. Have you changed the alias? It would make the link creation way too laborious IMO.

Also, I wonder if over linking will slow the program down. If you have a long topic with links every few words, is this going to cause performance issues?

The alias is unchangeable as it is used quite often in the descriptions and is also labeled "In" for the stats on the character. I think the best way to handle this would be to enable case detection for letters that are capitalized. I would enable it for that word and a few others (which I forget right now) that do annoy me every so often.

I had no idea how often "set" is used before RealmWorks. I am sorely tempted to rename Set to Set-the-god-who-creates-unwanted-linkages.

Like I have said if there was a way to set Realm Works to detect capitalization for for some words then that would help a lot of these unwanted references.

But the calendar is more important....just sayin'
