Installing Hero Lab without Admin Priveleges

Just wondering if there's a way to install Hero Lab without having Admin rights to a PC? I'd like to be able to play with character concepts on my lunch, but my work PC is locked down.

I do have a USB drive I use every day, and bring home each night. Would it be possible to install the program on that while at home and then license it to the work PC once connected there?

I dont think you can install HL onto a stick. The license uses information form your computer so is tied to one machine at a time. There is a free secondary license though that you could install on your work machine so you would have a copy of HL at both locations. But I think it has to run in admin mode no matter where the software is installed.

Well, if that's the case it's quite annoying. Another reason why (though I like Hero Lab) I really dislike it's DRM system.

Hi Saltorio,

You can indeed install Hero Lab onto a USB stick - just change the install folder when you do the install. However, there are some restrictions if you do so:

a) Even though it's on a USB stick, the license will still apply to the current computer, so if you license it on computer A then try to run it on computer B, you'll need to transfer your license.

b) You'll need to manually tell HL to store everything on the USB stick, rather than the standard Windows folders.

Here's the easiest way to do this:

1) Install Hero Lab on the USB drive, but don't run it just yet.

2) Create a folder on the USB drive called something like "HeroLabData". Let's say this folder ends up being named "e:\HeroLabData".

3) Modify the shortcut that launches Hero Lab to be launch the product with the following parameter:

-root="e:\HeroLabData"

Now, whenever you launch Hero Lab from that shortcut, it'll put data files, preferences, and saved user files in the e:\HeroLabData folder instead of the normal folders.

Hope this helps!
