Subject: [CardVault] Inventory by Default?

My primary use (at present) of CV is a card database, not a deck builder.
It would be great if I could have the Inventory as the primary screen
rather than having to open it each time I change game systems.

It was also be great if I could set the default fields to display in each
game's inventory when newly opened - it's a bit painful having to move/hide
certain fields, and with the number of games I intend to store it's going
to be something that I will get very frustrated about...

Futher, column drag and drop, and dynamic resizing would be a real benefit...

Thanks for listening,

R.

Yes, it sounds like you're describing a very Magic Suitcase like interface, and that's what I want more than anything too. Having a clone of the magic suitcase interface with CV extras (filter/sort buttons, update mechanism, etc.) and its inherant support for multiple game systems is something I would consider the best improvment yet. I really feel that suitcase did it right, and while CV is a great product the interface isn't optomized for what we need to do with the software. The ability to have a full inventory and your inventory open at the same time, or having inventory and a deck you're building open at the same time in the same window is EXTREMELY useful for managing card games, as we do.

If anybody else wants to see this, please speak up!

This has me confused. Could you please clarify???

Within CV, you can display all of your inventory information while you're
building your deck. Check out the "Inventory Left" column option within
Views and the other inventory fields you can display. You can also
configure CV to assist in building decks that match your inventory via a
number of options on the Settings menu. Specifically, look at "Validate
Against Inventory", "Only Show Cards Owned", and "Highlight Inventory Usage".

You cannot CHANGE your inventory while building a deck, but you can
definitely DISPLAY your inventory while building to guide you in the
process. That distinction is intentional, since inventory management is a
distinct task compared to deck building, and the two should be kept
separate IMHO.

The important thing is that you can show all the pertinent inventory data
while building a deck. And you can add your deck to your want list, so any
cards you are missing get automatically added to your acquire list.

What else would you like to see added?

Thanks, Rob

----------------

I know how to limit to inv when building a deck. Sorry, I wasn't clear, I'll try to explain better.

Well, firstly, suitcase uses databases. There is a master database that includes ALL cards (which you update for new sets and whatnot) then you can have as many inventories as you want, one of which is your master inventory ("My Inventory") then you have a database for each deck. I'm running version 7.0 and I'm not sure what they've added in the version 8 beta that's out now, but in 7.0: you can have ANY two databases open at the same time, in the same window. There fore you can have any combination of the master database, inventories, and decks open at any time. You can, say, have Jon Finkel's 2000 World Championship Tinker deck open, and have your Tinker deck open below it, comparing the two. Or you can have an inv for just your magic online cards, comparing it to your inv for normal cards, etc. It's important to note that it's not just that these are things I want added to CV, they we're examples of some of suitcases abilities. More than anything, I want CV to look and work like suitcase (as I said, with some of your features that are big improvements). I just prefer the interface of suitcase and the way it does things. If any other users out there agree with me, please speak up.

I don't know how familiar you are with suitcase, but you can go to http://www.perldragon.com/~suitcase/ for more info and a dl of the product.

I'm familiar with Suitcase. From your description, it sounds like you see
the following advantages in Suitcase:

1. Ability to compare one deck against another.

This has now been added to the todo list. If folks think this is a priority
important feature for us to add, please speak up. I never thought of this,
even using Suitcase myself in the past. CV definitely allows you to load
someone else's deck and then customize it, which is a common practice among
the players I know. But I didn't know anyone used Suitcase to do
side-by-side deck comparisons. :-)

2. Compare your inventory of one set of cards against another.

Again, I never thought of this. However, in this case, I honestly am not
seeing the ways in which this is truly helpful to the user. :-)

I definitely agree that it is valuable to compare one person's trade list
against another's want list. That's already been provided through CV's
exchange file reconciliation. And it's implemented in a much more useful
fashion than simply looking at two inventories side-by-side and manually
comparing them. But that's very different from the example you cite, so
maybe I'm not understanding your position.

Your example of tracking online cards vs. physical cards could be just as
easily modeled in CV by simply adding an "Online" and "Online Foil" style
to all the cards that exist in MTGO. Then it would be possible to track
these cards within CV just like any other cards. Hmmm. I'll have to suggest
this to Robert for the next update of the Magic files. :-)

3. You prefer the interface of Suitcase over CV.

Unfortunately, that's a matter of preference and not something concrete.
Thus far, you are one of two people I'm aware of that have stated they
prefer the Suitcase model of doing things. The number of folks who have
said they prefer CV's interface over Suitcase is a LOT higher. However,
neither position is "right", and the data either way is far from
conclusive. It's all a matter of preference, and I would hasten to guess
that some existing users of Suitcase will always prefer that interface
purely as a matter of familiarity. They know it, so they don't want to
switch. It's well documented that people don't like change, even if the
alternative may be better in the long run. Something about "homeostasis". :-)

For the time-being, the interface of CV will not be changing wholesale over
to that of Suitcase. If there is a significant outcry to change CV's
interface, we'll change it to something that folks want. Heck, we already
did this with the inventory manager in V1.1, and the feedback was been
nothing but positive. :-)

You are welcome to keep up your campaign to solicit more "votes". The data
so far is inconclusive. Until something conclusive compels us to change
things, we'll be focusing on adding other features to the product that
people are asking for. In the meantime, give the current interface a chance
and see if it's truly "worse" than Suitcase for you - or merely just
"different"....

Thanks, Rob

People may have some form of specific direct statistical comparisson in
mind but I wonder if everyone realises that you can run CV multiple times.
I've found that quite a useful way of running comparissons between two
different decks.
