How to output a Character Sheet?

I have the iPad version of Hero Lab and can't see how to create a character sheet (pdf presumably). I've tried to install a version on my PC and got an additional activation code, but that version claims it can't reach the internet and refuses to work. So I hope I don't need to use that to create a sheet. Last time I tried to run it, when I went back to my iPad it wanted to be reactivated so I'm afraid to even try the PC version again lest I loose access to my characters completely.

iPad can't print. You need the Windows/Mac version to print a paper character sheet. Kind of have to ask why print when you have an iPad?

Any ways the key of HL licenses is that you have a UNIQUE key for each computer. You get two free licenses so you can easily run a Desktop/iPad version.

if HL can't talk to the internet you will need to check your Antivirus and firewall software to allow it out.

Also see the License FAQ for info...

I need to print so I can give the DM a copy of the character sheet.

I do have two unique codes that's why I was surprised that it effected my iPad when I installed it on my PC. I checked the firewall and herolab was on the list of applications allowed to access the internet. I'll try it again when I get home today, but I'm worried I'll lose access to my characters on my iPad...

Do your DM a favor and tell him/her to get a copy. HL is awesome for managing combat in game.

People are asking why not just give the DM a virtual copy of the file. I imagine it's how alot of us around here operate.

I'm loving the software on my iPad, but right now I can't get the software to work on my PC, so I have a hard time recommending it.

It sounds like you may have used the same code on both the IPAD and the PC thus the license confusion?

Have you tried temporarily disabling your firewall to see if Hero Labs can connect? That will tell you if it is indeed the firewall blocking the applications access or something else altogether.

Have you logged an official fault?

The PC version is well worth the effort to get it working. As a DM anyway ;)

I managed to work around the issue for now. I manually downloaded the 5E .hl file from the wolflair site and imported it. That allowed me to load the 5e content and get passed the infinite "looking for updates". I did the same for the community pack by going here: http://www.shadowsoftware.net/herolab/5e/ and downloading the .hl file (oddly it seems to be 1.4 not 1.5 which I got on my iPad) and importing it. I opened one of my portfolios and it seemed ok, but I haven't checked it completely.

Thats because 1.5 would be the file that does NOT have a version number.

Based on the fact though that thousands of people have the auto-updates working. The issue is on your PC actually. I know not what you want to hear but something on your computer is blocking HL from accessing the internet.

I used the file without a version number. It showed up as 1.4.

Oh, I realize it must be something with my PC. Thing is that EVERY other application on my PC can access the internet perfectly well, so there must be something fairly unique going on with however hero lab is trying to do it that combined with something on my PC is causing the issue.

My bad. Too many systems. V1.5 is official 5e version. The community is version 1.4. And HL software is version like 7.6b.

So 1.4 is correct. :)

In the past Windows Defender has caused issues. Do you have that running?

"Official version"? Where can I download that? 7.6b is what I have installed.

I'll double check Windows Defender... I checked windows firewall, didn't look for defender. Hopefully it's that simple. :-)

The software Hero Lab has two sides to it. The 7.6b is the binary .exe file that runs in WIndows/Mac. The other side is the game system like (5e or Pathfinder or Shadowrun). This game system also has a version number and for 5e it's v1.5 for Patfinder it's 12.18.

If you are running in Windows with 5e your game version is 1.5 and HL version is 7.6b. Finally you have the Community created Pack that has a current version of 1.4. Just a few things to keep track of.

Hope that helps. :)

just my two cents my router also has a firewall built in and i know it has stopped a few things form running also, so you may want to look into that. jst my 2 cents
