HL Editor Pathfinder Custom Feats

After receiving permission from my GM to add a familiar to my Draconic bloodline sorcerer in Pathfinder, I decided I would try my hand at Hero Lab Editor and create a custom feat that would allow me to add the familiar. Draconic bloodline sorcerers aren't allowed to have them by Pathfinder's rules, but my GM is nice :) Anyway, I cannot figure out how to get the custom feat to trigger the selection of an Arcane Familiar in Hero Lab, which is necessary for me to use "Improved Familiar" to get my Pseudodragon. Anybody have any experience in something like this or maybe even done a custom feat for adding a familiar? Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I'd rather not monkey about with trying to create a custom class or archtype as I'm not sure I won't miss something and jack my sorcerer up completely.

Its much easier to create an archetype to add the familiar. Its VERY hard to do this with a feat. So you make the feat and add it to your character but then also add an archetype.

Archetypes are much simpler to work with and won't mess up your character. You will be making one for the sole purpose of adding a familiar.

So, the copied archetype or bloodline would have all the existing information from the bloodline, then I would just add the Arcane Bond-Familiar onto that? Also, seems as though there is a fair amount of scripting to this, is that an accurate statement?

I would create a new blank archetype. Call it "Sorcerer Familiar" or something. Have it do no modifications other than give a "Arcane Familiar" to the class. Then your new feat that will be just text no scripts. If you wanted to get fancy later you can have the Feat require the Archetype and the Archetype require the feat. This way only when both are added is the character valid.

Even the archetype has no scripts needed for adding a Familiar. It has a selection box setup. Its been awhile sense I looked and I am not near HL but from memory it was just a few values to select. Add the archetype to your sorcerer and boom it will now have a familiar.

If I get time I will outline a few of the steps to do this when I get home.

The archetype will have to bootstrap a few class abilities specific to familiars as well (look at the witch for example), the most important of which is "arcane familiar nearby", which grants you alertness and the skill/save/hp bonus granted by your familiar being within arms reach.

Wish I could afford to pay somebody to create this for me. I can't seem to find what is actually doing the work of telling Hero Lab to allow the selection of a familiar. I even loaded a Class Special that specifically grants an animal companion and couldn't see any kind of check boxes that were even selected. There were a couple bootstraps that seemed to specify that your "druid level was your sorc level - 3". Other than that, there seems to be no indication anywhere that would make that Class Special tell Hero Lab to allow the selection of an animal companion. Also, after creating a "Class Special" and selecting a few things and compiling it for use in Pathfinder in Hero Lab, I can't find the named "Class Special" in the Archtype selection list. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Select your archetype and scroll down until you get to the section called "Minions". For the New Companion Type line, choose Arcane Familiar, and then look below that for the "Arcane Familiar At Level" field, and type in 1 (I assume you get the familiar at 1st level).

Now for the class specials, add a witch to an empty portfolio and click on the button to display their class abilities. Make note of what the ability names are, and what level they are gained at (perhaps in a notepad document). It may be helpful to reorder every ability so they are in alphabetical order.

Now return to your archetype in the editor and scroll back up. Near the top there is a section called "Class Specials". Click on the blue "Class Special Abilities" button, and it will pop up a window. Click on the text which says "click to add another bootstrap" and that will open a 3rd window with all the various class specials in an alphabetical list. Scroll down that list, checking the boxes to left of each class special you want the archetype to add (use the list you made above). Once you've checked them all, hit the blue "OK" button in the lower left.

Now you should have several bootstraps displayed before you. The second column is "Gain at level", and refer back to your list to assign the correct levels to each special. Then hit the blue OK button again. Save the file and hit test now to integrate the archetype (or reload the game system).

Add the archetype to a test hero and make sure everything works as you expect.

Got it, thanks so much guys. Sorry for the possibly incorrect place for this posting. I'll try to do better next time.
