Hi there. I installed the latest version of AB and now the program won't
launch. Two error boxes come up, the first being: "Error starting program"
"The WININET.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:wnsprintfA."
The SHLWAPI.DLL file IS there... I copied it to the Armybuilder folder just
to see if that would work, but it didn't. And I don't know what :wnsprintfA
means.

Anyway, second box that comes up is "E:\ArmyBuilder\ArmyBldr.exe" "A device
attached to the system is not funcioning." I checked the CD rom, and it
seems to be working. I guess this might be related to the first error.

Any help would be appreciated, as I can't boot up Army Builder now :( I'm
bummed. Thanks!

Fred

Rob,

Before you take this off to private email you should know that I had the
same problem installing 2.0b tonight. In fact, after all of the above
errors, Windows 98 more or less crashed. It stayed up, but no applications
would run. I reinstalled Windows 98 and everything's running, except for
my cable modem connection to the internet (though that may be an
independent ISP problem). Interestingly enough, after reinstalling Windows
98 my copy of Ab 2.0b starting working just fine.

Perhaps not a small problem after all?

Nope. Not a small problem. I wasn't sure of the extent, and it seemed
likely to result in a back-and-forth of emails, so I didn't want to clutter
this list until I got it sorted out.

The problem is that V2.0b started including the file "wininet.dll" in the
installation. A few users complained V2.0a wouldn't launch due to the
auto-notify stuff requiring that file. Unfortunately, installing this file
opens up a nasty chain reaction of DLL dependencies (I'm now not sure how
far the chain goes). If the full set isn't replaced properly, things break.
I had thought I had identified the proper dependency chain and included
them in the installer, but it's not documented well by Microsoft, so I
screwed up - and my testing didn't uncover the combinations where it went
awry.

By re-installing Windows, you got the file set properly sorted out. The
reported problem was also resolved by re-installing IE4.0, which was the
original browser installed on the user's machine. This served the same
purpose without requiring him to get out the Windows discs. I would assume
that this solution also would have worked for you.

I immediately removed this file from the installer once the problem was
reported, so no one who downloaded after that should encounter this issue.
I need to figure out the complete set of files required by AB (probably by
trial-and-error since the Microsoft information seems pretty useless) and
then make that available as a separate download for anyone that doesn't
have wininet installed on their system.

Sorry for the headaches on this one. It's been quite a headache for me as
well. :-)

Thanks, Rob
