HeroLab Upgrade -- Where'd my .USER Files go?

Adam.Ormond

I just upgraded HeroLab, and it apparently uninstalled and deleted my old installation? I see it migrated my character (por) files, but I can't find my .user files. Where'd they go?

You can always find the "data" folder containing the user files by going to the Tools menu within Hero Lab and choosing Explore Folders -> Program Data Folder. :)

To help future readers here is the new folder location information from the HL manual about where 3.7 puts its stuff.

By default, Hero Lab keeps its files in three places. They are:
  • Install Folder – Where Hero Lab is installed. By default, this will be something like "C:\Program Files\Hero Lab". You pick this when you install the product.
  • Program Data Folder – Where Hero Lab keeps its data files. This will be something like "C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab" on Windows 7, or "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab" on Windows XP/Vista.
  • User Data Folder – This is different for each windows user, and will typically be something like "My Documents\Hero Lab" (note that "My Documents" is a different folder for each windows user).

Thanks ShadowChemosh. I too was surprised they moved the files around (I kinda liked having everything in one install directory instead of having to fish for it in 3 different folders).

For those who want to disable the other game systems they are not using:

1) Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab"
2) Remove the folders of the system you don't want.

NOTE: You can make duplicates of the same system so you can have different rulesets by just copying the folder.

OR if you want to keep the folders just-in-case:
1) Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab"
2) Rename the "data" folder to "data_bak"
3) Make a new "data" folder
4) Move or copy the "data_bak/<your game system>" to "data"

Now if I can only figure out how to ignore the updates for those games systems not in my data directory.

I agree with everything being in the same folder was nice. Esp since the .user file folder was a hidden one....

To view Hidden folders in Windows 7:

1) Start => Control Panel
2) Appearance
3) Under `Folder Options` click on Show hidden files and folder
4) Under the folder `Hidden files and folders` select the radio button Show hidden files, folders, or drives

Now that you have Hidden folders shown will notice a new directory in your root called ProgramData (this is like the Application Data folder in Windows XP).

Your data directory on Windows 7 is then in the Hero Lab folder (i.e. C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data)
