Herolab Editing

I am trying to create a new monster in Herolab, however when I open the editor I can't find a data file to edit? Where are the data files stored at?

If you have not created any .user files then you have nothing to open. So instead you would do File->New Data Set....

Once you have a new data file you can do a New(Copy) in the monster tab to copy an existing monster. But if it is from outside of CORE you will be only able to see it you will not be allowed to change it.

My advice once in the Editor go to the Help->Help on using the Editor and read over that stuff. It will go over the basics for you.

You can also download stuff that the community has created which you can use to help give you a jump start also. Everything from the community will be fully editable/changeable. You can find the links in my signature.

You would create your own data (user) file for your custom items. Just start with a new blank one then save it as the name of your choice. After that whenever you want to add to it you open that one up.

Alternately you could create a data file and name it after the book you are entering.

Once you have the files created they show up in the check boxes under configure hero just like the official additional content.

Where are the user files stored? I have a copy of the Pathfinder data, but now I can't find it to open it although it shows up as a option to load when I first launch HL.

On Windows 7, they are stored in :\Program Data\Hero Lab\Data\Pathfinder. You may have to turn on "Show Hidden Files and Folders" to navigate to it thru Explorer.

C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\docs\kit\kit_editor.htm

Also, this link is broken when you click on Editor Basics.
Can someone post an overview of how you create custom data?
Do I want to edit the Pathfinder data? Create new data? How do I merge custom data with the pathfinder data when I create it? Where is the custom and original data stored? Can I screw up the original data? If so, how do I avoid doing that?

The way the editor works is that user files work on top of the regular items. By default, this means that you only add things (say, a new feat or a new monster). If you want to replace extant items, you look up their ID (right click it in the interface to find out what that is) and you'll see off to the right for main edit window a place for a "Replaces Thing ID" field or something similarly named.

Worst comes to worst, move your malfunctioning .user files (generated in the c:\programdata folder) out and no harm will be done.
