Hero Labs crashing

Every time I click on the Race to choose my characters race, I get a message that says

"HeroLabs.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Then the following pops up from windows:

What is Data Execution Prevention?

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory locations reserved for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files.

DEP can help protect your computer by monitoring your programs to make sure that they use system memory safely. If DEP notices a program on your computer using memory incorrectly, it closes the program and notifies you.

I have not been able to select a class for any character ever :(

I have uninstalled Herolabs via the control panel and then reloaded it and continue to have the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
Rick

P.S. I am using windows vista home premium edition with service pack 2.

My first question in such situations is, did you install as an administrator? Most programs shouldn't have to install as an admin, but Microsoft has an all or nothing approach where either you''re an admin and have all privileges, or you're a guest and have none (it is possible to set up intermediate levels of security, but tedious in my experience, requiring setting up custom profiles for each combination and possibly logging in and out).

And while it probably won't impact the eventual answer, but to help clarify things for Colen, which system are you playing? I can think of three off of the top of my head which use classes.

Lastly, don't forget to send an email to support@wolflair.com so as to get yourself into the service queue. Colen's frequently working on the next version of Hero Lab or Army Builder, so he doesn't read the message boards all of the time.

I am using HeroLabs: Pathfinder.

I did install as the administrator.

I have since loaded it on another laptop and had no issues there. However, I am still having the problems on the primary laptop I will be using.

Additional information that I think may be impacting it.
I had the demo version and attempted to create a custom race and started having this issue. I decided it might just be something with it being the demo version so that is when I went ahead and purchased the full program as well as most of the suppliments for Pathfinder. I am quite bummed to not be able to give any of my characters a race. Everything seems to work fine as long as I don't attempt to specify a race.

I am going to look today and see if there is a more complete way to uninstall herolabs and reload it, since it worked on the other pc just fine. If you have any recommendations or information that, it would be appreciated.

Thanks again!

Rick

If you created a custom race that means their is a .user file in the data folder. I would remove that .user file for now out of the HeroLab\Data\Pathfinder folder and then restart HL and try again. Not saying for sure that is what is causing it but may as well remove that variable at least.

The only other issue can be that HeroLab should not be installed into the windows Program Files folder and it can cause authority issues from windows.

Thanks shadow. I had actually just created another one so i could track it down. I did find the .user file, uninstalled HL, the data files remained so I deleted that directory and re-installed. Everything works great now.

Thanks guys!
