Hero Lab - Problem saving PDF Portfolio

Alright, I downloaded the PDF plugin and then restarted Hero Lab.

It still gives me:
"To create PDF files, you must download the PDF plugin for Hero Lab. This is available as a free download from the updates mechanism."

So I went to the Updates section and tried to Download the plugin again..
It gives me:
"The file to be downloaded already exists on your computer. Are you sure you want to overwrite the existing file with the new version?"

When I tell it yes it gives me:
"Error writing file to the disk. Please check to make sure that your disk can be written to and that you have sufficient disk space available."

Now I know that I have plenty of diskspace (unless the plugin takes up 43 Gig) and it isn't write protected. The only other thing that I think it could be is an incompatiblity issue with Vista.

Any thoughts?

Did you install the PDF plugin after you downloaded it?

HL should have downloaded the plugin to the c:\herolab\downloads
directory - does it work if you manually install it from there?

Hope this helps,

Well I think that it isn't downloading properly cause the file shows pdfcanvas.1.2 but its only 13kb.. is this correct?
Where can I downloaded this file and manually install it there?

Ok so now its not just the PDF plugin that gives me....."Error writing file to the disk. Please check to make sure that your disk can be written to and that you have sufficient disk space available."

I tried downloading the updated v1.2b and it gives me the same error...
Could this be some weird security permissions thing with Vista?
I have my firewalls turned off so that isn't blocking it...

Any thoughts?

Ah, you're right, it is a vista security setting! To get it to
automatically install, you'll need to right-click on Hero Lab and choose
"Run as Administrator" (and then accept the UAC popup), instead of
launching it normally. Then you can go to the updates mechanism and have
it download and install updates properly.

After I did that, Windows recognised what needed to be done and I didn't
have to run it as administrator again. I'll see what we need to do for
it to automatically prompt for UAC in the future.

Hope this helps,

I believe the PDF plug-in is only detected when the product launches. That means that you need to re-launch HL after downloading and installing the PDF plug-in. Have you tried that? If not, give it a try and see if it solves the problem. If that doesn't work, then Colen is the expert on this and will need to take it from here.

<fingers crossed>

I have a different problem - another PDF plugin is running

My HL is up-to-date. My portfolio's don't save to pdf for D&D 5e. When I download the PDF plugin, I get the error

"Setup has detected that a product which uses the PDF plug-in is currently running. Please close all products that use the plug-in before you attempt to install this updated version."

I actually can't find my herolab\downloads folder so I could manually delete and re-install the update. I would appreciate some help.

Just click behind the install and close down HL. That is the programming using the plug-in. Click continue or ok to finish the install.
