Hero Lab Portfolios need to be edited first?

What's up with this? I'm putting in the Emerald Spire, and the community portfolios available are great, and correct, but when I load a portfolio into RW, I get an error message that says it's outdated.

I have to load the file, add 1 to a stat, subtract it back, save it, close HL, go back to RW, save the changes for every portfolio.

What happened here? What changed in HL/RW to make one version of the portfolo no longer valid?

Guesswork:

Portfolios come with a built-in "I was saved using HL version X" checker, and RW's ability to use portfolios requires that X be a certain number or higher (to avoid errors). So, to correctly function, the HL file needs to be dirtied up and saved, so that it shows a higher version number that RW is happy with.

Portfolios are a renamed ZIP file. You can open them and poke through the (mostly XML) files if you want to, say, compare two portfolios saved with different versions of Hero Lab. I tried it with a character saved last May and there were some minor differences in the non-system specific areas. (The main things I learned were that the Pathfinder skill descriptions expanded greatly between 9.2 and 10.11 and the XML encodings changed to UTF-8.)

While I didn't see anything in that span of time that seems that important, it doesn't matter all that much. What's important is what Chemlak said: RW has a minimum version required to use a portfolio. IIRC, Realm Works has changed minimum Hero Lab versions a couple of times since official release.

Yep this is the issue. And Pathfinder Community is up to 7gigs of .por files. So I have not gone back and updated them.

If you have a set like Emerald Spire you can do this in an easy way though. Start HL and go to "Tools->Prepare Folder for Distribution" (or similar wording). That will GREP through all the folders and .por files and cause them all to be re-saved.

There was a bug in Hero Lab that caused extracted statblocks to get stuffed up in Realm Works. We could either spend days to deal with it in Realm Works or just require portfolios saved with the fixed version of Hero Lab. We chose the latter so we could keep working on the features that you guys are all clamoring for. :)

Excellent reason for this to happen. And excellent solution. Pls make marketplace work and sell me RotRL. I'll just cope with HL issues. It's all good. Lol.

Thanks Rob.

Thank you for this, much love!

Also, it's under Develop after you unlock debugging. Thanks!

Geez, Rob, there you go thinking again. We really need to talk about this. ;)

Thanks for the concise explanation and for the tip that ShadowChemosh tossed out. I really don't use this feature yet but I hope that if/when I do, I remember this. :)

Hope work on calendars is continuing nicely. :D
