Exernal MIDI Event Triggering of "Reveal Events in RealmWorks"

Portal

New member
Hi everyone,

I'd like to use an external MIDI pattern sequencer to MIDI event trigger Reveal actions for Realm objects to Players from a GM host instance.

This would allow me as a GM to dynamically trigger audio, image, and video objects in a set pattern in response to a player character decision during campaign play. Is there any technical functionality in the software platform that would allow this?

BTW - I'm so looking forward to Journal object and Individual Character Reveal functionality!! :)

Thanks for your help,
Marcus {Portal}

There is no direct support, but you could add a "Foreign Object" Snippet containing a file which you could launch from RW.

The file in the snippet could be a tiny MIDI file containing the required sequence, then when you "Launch" the file from RW it will load the file into your external program.

This would require "launching" the snippet file separately from revealing a topic/snippet.

AH, re-reading your question. My solution only works within the single PC being used by the GM.

If you want the sound to play from the Player's Edition when they synchronise their copy of the realm, then they would have to manually trigger the snippet themselves. (It isn't intended for GM and players to repeatedly sync through a single game session.)

Hi Farling,

When the GM Reveals a Realm object, does that object become available for viewing by the Player client instances in realtime (i.e. content "push")? Or does it require a player to take a re-sync action with the server (i.e. a content pull action)?

Thanks again for your help! :)

The GM exits the realm, and then syncs that realm to the server.

The player then exits the realm, and syncs his copy from the server. The player would then re-open the realm.

It isn't designed for instant update, since it isn't intended to be a VTT.

Player Version is intended for off-line use; Player View within the GM version of RW is intended for in-game use.

Thanks, Farling.

I was hoping the Player client was a real-time client app for independent instances on each player's mobile device or laptop. Then, GMs could virtualize the presentation of their game world independently to each player, with each player-character having its own view of the game reality.

Is such functionality coming down the road? I'm really looking forward to a client-server RPG app like this, because it would transform how the tabletop RPG can be played.

RW will likely synch GM material in real-time. Eventually. No ETA ever mentioned but it's been stated as a goal. However, adding infrastructure to synch from GM to LWD and then push that to players seamlessly and without interaction has never been mentioned or hinted at. I would imagine the web client may be able to achieve this but again, no word.

RW will theoretically be supported by d20pro which is real-time VTT. That may be direction you need to look to implement this functionality. It sets up a client-server relationship between players and GM with information revealing in real-time by default or at GM push if desired.
