Error upon re-installing HeroLab

Lord Magus

Well-known member
I've gotten a new laptop, and decided to re-install HeroLab from scratch instead of migrating from my (very old) previous laptop.

Uppn starting the Authoring Kit, I get this error:

The data files could not be loaded due to the following errors:

File: components.1st (line 11) - Fixed attribute 'signature' does not match specified value

Is there anything I can do to correct that?
Using MacBook Air M3 with macOS Sonoma 14.6.1

The .1st file comes from the default Authoring Kit installation, as I did not migrate anything from my old setup and just reinstalled from scratch.

Line 11 is
Code:
<document signature="Hero Lab Augmentation">

As far as I can tell, the standard authoring kit installation has a components.core file, not a components.1st file, and the <document> element in that file is:

<document signature="Hero Lab Structure">

"Hero Lab Augmentation" should only be on files with the .aug extension.

I deleted the "sample" folder, re-downloaded HL Classic 8.9k (last version available) and re-installed it. When selecting the "sample game system" (authoring kit), I get the same message; there are no .user or other outside files in this game folder, just what is supplied when downloading HeroLab.

Oh, sample game system, not the skeleton files you get from Develop...Create New Game System (which is what I think of as what comes with the authoring kit, since that's been my starting point for new games). Let me look at what's in that folder.

The copy I have of the sample files says Hero Lab Structure in the components.core file, and is a .core file, not a .1st file.

I think you'll need to edit this file to have the settings it's supposed to have. I do not know how you're getting information that is different from what I'm seeing on my copy.

Also, the latest version I have is 8.9h, and you're saying you downloaded 8.9k, so there's something weird there, too.

Looking at the directory, there are both a components.1st file and a components.core file. If I try to remove the components.1st file and restart HeroLab, the program automatically adds a new copy of the components.1st file to the game folder, and thus spits out the same error message.

This is beyond my understanding at this point. Something is going on that shouldn't be happening as far as I know. I'm going to have to ask someone else to reply to this thread - he'll know more about how HL works at the engine level (I work on the data files - defining the elements of the game systems).

Actually, a thought on this - is there a point to opening the sample game system on its own? If you're going to edit things, you'll be copying the folder to create a new folder named for the game system you're building, right?

So can this issue just be worked around by copying and renaming the folder, and then hopefully the copy won't be auto-changed the way the sample folder is (although how that's happening without a full reinstall I don't know).

Tried that: program came up with the same error. Deleted components.1st: it did not automatically replace it, but came up with the same error message for another .1st file. Deleted that one too: got same error from equipment.core... At that point I just gave up. There seems to be a core dysfunction for the authoring kit, at least for the 8.9k version of HeroLab for Mac, running on macOS Sonoma 14.6.1
