Eldritch Knights and improved familiars

The hero labs system is alerting me that I must be level 7 to acquire the faerie dragon familiar using improved familiar.

My current make up is, Fighter 1, Wizard 5, Eldritch Knight 2 with improved familiar taken as my level 7 feat. The only reference I have found to this on the boards is almost identical makeup with the response being "eldritch knight only adds to caster level".

This however is not true. The eldritch knight class ability "Diverse Training", received at level 1, says "He also adds his level to any levels in an arcane spellcasting class for the purpose of meeting the prerequisites for feats."

The improved familiar feat states as prerequisites, "Prerequisites: Ability to acquire a new familiar, compatible alignment, sufficiently high level (see below)."

As the level requirement to acquire the faerie dragon is listed as a prerequisite of the feat, the Diverse Training class feature clearly applies and a wizard 5 eldritch knight 2 character meets the requirements to get the level 7 improved familiars.

With that being said, is there any update planned to correct this oversight?

There's no fault. your first level of Eldritch Knight did not advance your caster level.

You're still only Caster Level 6. When you take your next level of EK, you should be ready for your familiar. You're treated as a 7th level Wizard for feats that require that class level, but the feat/familliar combination you want requires a CASTER level of 7, which you do not have yet.

In summation, for purposes of feat pre-reqs you are a Fighter 2, Wizard 7, with a Caster Level of 6.

Unfortunately that is not true. Improved familiar does not work off caster level but instead off spell caster class levels. Otherwise magical knack would have qualified me for it at level 7 with 1 fighter, 5 wizard, and 1 EK.

This is why the d20 version does requires 7 levels of wizard and the pathfinder version will work with 5 wizard and 2 EK. D20 does not get diversified training.

Either way you slice it you need to put in an official Bug Report for the issue. Putting the info in the forums will often mean it gets over looked. Plus it looks like your going to want to get a response directly from LW on this one.

The table for the improved familiar feat reads Arcane Spellcaster Level, not Arcane Class level. In most cases there would be no difference. PrC's like the EK complicate things.
