Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes Bug

DeathStryke

New member
Whenever I open my roster with a unit of Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes I get this message:

The following warnings occurred:
Critical information not found in data files: Link 'ThrowAxe'

DS

I have the same problem, and it's with brand new rosters.

Basically, do the following.

start a dwarf army,
add warriors
add warriors
upgrade warriors to rangers
upgrade rangers to longbeards
upgrade rangers with great weapons
upgrade rangers with hand axes.

Save Roster
re-open roster.
screen pops up with the error message above, and the ranger unit doesn't appear.

Thanks
Bob

Hey, it happens to me too, but maybe this will help...
It only happens with a roster I created on the last version. If I create a new roster with version 3.1c, it doesnt happen anymore. But for some reason as soon as I load an old saved unit (like a hero) the next time I load the roster it happens again. You might just have to recreate your rosters :(

Ok Scratch that last post. It happens to me on new rosters too. But only if you add the command group before upgrading to rangers. If you upgrade to rangers then add the command group it doesnt happen. Its really weird anyway.

Although it works fine for me, I did notice that having great weapons is not a requirement for upgrading to Rangers in AB. According to the rulebook, the unit must have them first before they can be upgraded to Rangers at all.

Just a niggling little issue, but important since depending on the size of the unit it could be a sizeable number of points.

Cheers, Gary

silashand: Actually, AB does complain if the rangers don't have great weapons if you haven't noticed. Or is there a special situation when it happens not to?

The throwing axe error does happen if you follow the steps BadgerB wrote. Note the save - open steps in the end. Make sure, as Troymin said, that you include a command group before upgrading to rangers. I get the same error.

Try again, robert. Good luck :)

I know it displays a warning, but unlike the situation where say a character with a magic hand weapon wants to carry a pistol which has uses both as a hand weapon and a missile one, the requirement for great weapons is that, a requirement. Models can still carry a pistol to shoot with even if they have a magic hand weapon. They just cannot use it in HtH to gain the extra attack. I just think that since having GWs is a prerequisite that the ranger options should not be opened up unless the unit has already paid for the mandatory weapons. Otherwise I think it just adds a little confusion for users who can just go ahead and print out the list and ignore the warning if they like.

And I still don't get the error and I have followed the exact steps as above. Adding rangers whether I add the command group first or not works fine for me. I just tried it again to make sure. And yes, I have the most recent WFB file :-).

Cheers, Gary

Do I understand you right, do you mean that Great Weapons should be auto-checked and unchecking disabled instead of the warning? Well, I agree. That could be changed :)

Funny that you don't get the error. Some step must have gone wrong or maybe it works differently for different people - something I wouldn't understand :?

No, great weapons shouldn't be auto-checked. The ranger upgrade should be disabled unless the unit has purchased great weapons. I am thinking that checking the great weapon box should enable it as an option.

I dunno. I just tried it both ways as above and it worked for me.

Cheers, Gary

Oh you meant it would be like that. Well, it could be an possibility, but wouldn't it be frustrating in case you don't know they must have great weapons? "Why can't I check that? Grr...", or maybe someone would get frustrated about having to move the mouse pointer down to the Great Weapon alternative and then back up. I belong to the latter category. I prefer it the way it is as it's easier this way, and I don't think people actually would use their lists if the validation report complains about them not having great weapons. In that case they could ignore about any rules and definitely shouldn't be playing Warhammer

Since you for some reason aren't able to reproduce the error with throwing axes, I uploaded a series of screenshots where I demonstrate the bug.

Seems like I misunderstood this "add download" thingy. Thought you just would be able to look at it in your browser as it's a picture, but whatever... ;)

Hope it's useful :)

I belong to the category of if you actually read the rules you will know you cannot do that.

Should, should, should. I've met too many people who will not only abuse a list, but if it allows them to intentionally cheat then they will. Having had to deal with the excuse "well, army builder let me do it" I know firsthand how many people pay close attention to the validation report. Sure, if they are tech-savvy enough it won't matter as they can change what they want, but I prefer as little room for abuse as possible. Besides, doing it the way I suggest enforces people make the correct choices as well as preventing an error message that has no business being there in the first place.

JMO...

Cheers, Gary

Well, if there ARE such morons, then feel free to change it to prevent cheating on that point... I just look at AB as a comfortable way of creating army lists, and you see my point in that extra mouse moving cutting down that comfortability. One alternative would be adding a new Rangers unit choice and skip the checkbox in the Warriors unit options. How about that?

Did you by the way take a look at my screenshots regarding the Throwing Axe error?

wow that is a weird bug! adding the command group first made it happen for me... i will send it along...

to do the great weapon thing a different way would be a lot harder to do... and since the unit name turns red when you dont have it... and since armybuilder warns you "the roster is invalid!! are you sure??" before you print... someone who ignores it i think actively wants to cheat :~(
