Disabling item selection

I know that if I set the # Items in a unit to 0, then clicking on the items button will generate an error indicating none can be taken.

However, I want to be able to set certain units to have items by default,
however for the button to still generate the error. Is there a way to do that,
or do I have to be happy with the items interface refusing to allow them to add
any more within the selection window?

This should work- give the unit the local attribute:

take:myitem-free-perm

Where myitem is the unique id of the item.

Steve (Mr Bugman)

That's exactly what your earlier advice to me allowed me to do.

a) In your data definition file, you've made the "Items" category hidden.
b) Set #Items to accomodate for all default weapons being "forced"
c) In the Unit:Local Attribute add "spec:+Item"
d) In the Unit:Local Attribute add "take:MyItem-perm"

I personally don't specify "-free" because in the Item description I set
it's cost. (Incl/Free/Cost).

That does make them permanent, however it doesn't allow me to reduce the #items
to 0 to prevent the items window from even coming up.

Did you remember the -free part? It's working for me...

If you look at the latest Warhammer Fantasy lizardmen file (lz.wf6) you
can see how I did the Kroq-Gar special character. He's has 0 set as his #
items, but he still gets both the ones I specified with the take attribute
and he cannot open the item selection screen.

Yeah, I can get that much just fine, but I'd like the unit to behaive as if its
# items was set to 0, and not let the dialogue window to even come up any more.

AFAIK, using -free allows you to take the item even if you have your #
items set to 0, whereas if you decide not to use -free and simply set the
item to cost 0 points the unit will not be able to take it if he can't
take any items.

Figured it out!

In the datadef.wf6, you've got the last field of *most* of the item categories
set to '0', meaning that selecting an item from that category doesn't cost any
slots. Mine were all set to '1'. This meant, since I had no slots available,
it couldn't charge the required slot. With that changed to '0', it works
just fine.

Yep, tried that. As soon as I change the # Items to 0, all the player's stuff
disappears. I've spec'ed the item categories they come from, I've take'n the
items in question -free-perm, but the # Items still governs how many show up,
either none (0), all of them (9), or some (1-8)...

For the curious, this is for Thrud the Barbarian...;-)

What is the 'Items Charged' value for the item's category set to in your
datadef file? If it is greater than 0 that might be why it's not working.

There's pretty much no way to do this that I am aware of Steve. I tried to do the same type of thing early in the Chaos list, to no avail. Once their item availability goes above 0 then the eqp't screen shows.

Cheers,
