OK, I'm a bit embarrased to ask, but how do you get the 'models in
army' total to appear above the options panel?

Search the docs for 'accumulated stats', that should find you everything
you need.

accu:"name"=stat{-base=value}{-expr=(expr)}{#mode}{#legal}

You need to use the 'accu' race attribute as detailed above. The value of
the stat you give will then be totalled up throughout the roster, and
displayed under the given name in the accumulated stats window.
