Stephen,
That is because AB adding a standard or musician simply "converts" one of
the existing figures into that special figure. If your unit size is 5
adding standard gives you a unit of 4 figs plus a standard. Thus you do pay
the true cost - the figure is already paid for, you just pay for the
function.

This is correct wihtin AB. When you purchase a standard bearer (or
musician), you are simply "promoting" an existing model in the unit to the
new status - no new model is added. Consequently, the cost of the model
doubles, so the cost of the option is equal to the cost of a normal model
in the unit.
Hope this helps,
Rob

But surely if that applied, it would apply to the normal bikers too?

The squad entry in the codex tells you what squad upgrades are available.

Hello,
I don't know if you created the data files for Mordheim on your site, but if so I've run into an error I'd like to point out. Ork are allowed to take Dwarf axes, but in the data file it won't let me take them. Not trying to be anal, just letting you know. If you created the files, thank you, I have greatly enjoyed them. If not maybe you could pass on my thanks, and the error to the maker.
Thanks for your time,
Jeremy Swain
