Hello
I don't know how many Linux fans are also Army Builder fans or vice
versa. Anyway if there are any, you may be interested to know that
Army Builder seems to run fine using WINE. I got the preview release
from
http://www.codeweavers.com/home.html
caveat - Some of the fonts seemed not quite the right size, and I
haven't tried printing, which might be interesting.

I was building a DA army the other day and I noticed that I couldn't
give the Tech, Apoth, or Standard bearer Term. honors. I noticed in
an earlier post that you had disallowed Term Honours for the
characters as per the codex, but I thought that the upgraded marines
in the command squad could still get them.
Is this a fix that went a little too far or did I miss something
somewhere.
Thanks

I play them, too. Yes, they can have Terminator Honors
(still costs the usual 15 points, but they can have it).

Hi,
A quick question:
---------
Chaos:
Models in Terminator Armour can no longer take Spiky Bits or Bionics.
--------
Why can't chaos characters in termie armor be given spikey bits?
Thanks...

GW has thought this over and consider spiky bits a near endorsement of such
things as "running with scissors". So to prevent any public incidents, they
enacted a safety recall on all spiky bits. Please return them to your
nearest retailler for a pro-rated refund.

Will have to check it out.
Be really nice, if they just came out with a native version for linux
(HINT HINT!). As is, I normally use it under VMWare->Win98.
Assuming the program is written in Visual Basic, the programmers
might want to check out the GB project, it complies and runs VB code
under linux.
Contact me off list for details.

Never, ever assume something's written in VB...
I believe Rob uses Borland C++. And since it's _only_ Rob doing it, I
wouldn't expect a native version any time soon...

Agreed, but as Visual Basic is about the hardest to translate into
linux, thats the exuse most progammers use, even if its not written
in VB.
Borland make is all the easier, Borland C++ is even better supported
under Linux. As is just about any C(++) (yes, Even MS Visual C)
I can understand that its a pain to support a differant platform. But
it might be worth it for him to take on someone who can suppot that
platform for him.
Might not even have to pay the guy anything really (say 10-20% of the
linux sales or something instead of a upfront salary).
The more ideas, and suggestions we give him, the more likely he will
find one he likes.

Does anyone know, have there been any AB data files

I'd be shocked. The only historical ruleset I've seen even started is DBM.

Shako is a moderate and grand battle ruleset for
Napoleanics, with some nifty extensions for the
seven years war. It is suprisingly simple and
fast paced for a Napoleanic wargame.

Hi Jimi, when & where did this get decided? What possible difference
between spikey bits on power armor vs terminator armor could there be?
After all, what are all of those spikey bits with skulls and stuff
that I have glued onto my chaos termies! If those don't qualify as
spikey bits... sheesh! ;-/

I am NOT a graphics guy. I know enough to limp along and that's about it. I
also have a zillion other tasks that are vying for my time and attention.
Having ME do this ends up with the task at the bottom of a very long list
of things to do. However, if you would like to write up something like this
and make it available to users, I would be happy to publish it on the
web-site where everyone can get access to it. This would then make it
possible for me to add in support for watermarks without a huge amount of
effort, which would make the feature MUCH more likely to appear in the near
term. If you're interested in taking on this task, please put something
together and get it to me. Since I'm not a graphics guy, I figure that if I
can understand it, it ought to be useful to a lot of folks out there.
I'd prefer if the "How To" document were an HTML file (much like the AB
Tutorial), although a text file that I can convert to RTF will work fine, too.
Thanks, Rob

That's the trick. How do you "lighten" a black&white image? Answer: You
can't. The solution is to process the black areas into distributed gaps
between the dots of black ink. Doing this well is not a trivial task in any
way, shape, or form. I recommend taking a look at newspaper under a
magnifying lens some day. You'll see that the "grey" areas are actually
regions with the black dots dispersed a bit. The grey is an illusion, since
it's all black or white. This is where things get complicated and why it's
not a simple task to do.

AB uses the standard Windows printing mechanism. The printer driver handles
all the details. If a printer is black&white, then it's up to me to place
every pixel on the page and decide whether it's black or white. There is no
such thing as transparency at that level, and the transparency capabilities
would only be useful for a subset of all AB users that have printers
supporting such capabilities.

The image goes in the BACKGROUND first of all, so transparency is
meaningless. Second, AB is the one that has to do all the rendering you
refer to. That means I have to write the code. Your printer does NOT
understand about JPEG or GIF images. It's up to the program to interpret
things properly and pass it to the printer correctly. Please see my previos
post for more details on this.

This is definitely the way I envisioned it working. Some users won't want
the watermarks, so why make them download them all? It needs to be a
separate thing that users can avail themselves of if they want.

It would be WAY too much work for the small number of users that would
purchase it. A Mac version would definitely come out before a Linux
version, and there still isn't enough justification for a Mac version.
Besides, most folks can already use one of the emulators, so most Linux
users don't NEED a native version (it would merely be a convenience).

AB is written entirely in C/C++. It's almost 200,000 lines of code,
including the Construction Kit tools. That's a LOT to port.

Is this a fix that went a little too far or did I miss something
somewhere.

I play them, too. Yes, they can have Terminator Honors
(still costs the usual 15 points, but they can have it).

Chaos:
Models in Terminator Armour can no longer take Spiky Bits or Bionics.

Why can't chaos characters in termie armor be given spikey bits?
