This leads to a nice confrontation - a GW email versus a GW book. The IA
book (specifically page 5) gives a nice long list of what vehicles can be
taken and what they count as in an IG detachment.

IMO, you should be following an actual printed ruling than an email - if GW
want to exclude IA then they have various means to do so ie WD, CJ, etc.

What does it say in the Codex? I don't actually have it...

<snip specific vehicles>

It says there that they be used as part of "an Imperial Guard army". IMAO,
the "even if they are not included in Codex Imperial Guard" bit refers to
the vehicles, not the army... am I barking up the wrong tree here?

The book allows you to swap out normal vehicles from an C:IG army and
replace them with IA ones.

I don't understand where you're getting that from. Does it say that in
another part of the codex?

The IA book - page 5 (the bit I quoted)

> Does it say that in another part of the codex?

The codex just gives you a normal everyday run-of-the-mill army list - its
the IA book that does the tweaking.

"As noted in the introduction all of the vehicles in this book can be used in

Fair enough. This means I can use the Imperial Armour tanks in a normal
imperal guard army.

"Each vehicle used counts as one of the
choices for the army,"

E.g., a Heavy Support or Fast Attack choice.

"of the type indicated below, with the points cost
indicated in the rules that follow."

The rules tell you what's Heavy Support, what's Troops, etc., and what the
cost is.

That's how I see it, at least...

Well, in the Catachan Codex, under Deathworld Veteran Armies, it says, "The
army is not allowed to take any vehicles other than Sentinals"

Very true - thus the IA book allows you to use Sentinel Powerlifters in a
Catachan army.

And any sub-codex that allows you to take vehicles - the Catachan codex
disallows vehicles except Sentinels so you can use the IA Powerlifter in a
Catachan army.

The list of vehicles I quoted from page 5 is what you use to get IA vehicles
into an IG army
