Subject: Question on how to generate stats from a parent unit.
I need to set up an option which will add a child unit.
The stats for the child unit will be partially derived from the
stats of the parent unit, but there are many different parent units
which could have this one child.
e.g. the child unit could have a parent unit with a move of 4 or 5 or
6.
Is there any way of setting up a unit so that the stats are derived
from the parent?
Secondly is there any way of deriving the unit cost of the child from
the parent? (A child model should cost as much as a parent model,
which is variable, plus a few points).
Hope someone can help, as this is driving me nuts.

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone else has this same problem, or just me - when
creating a Middenheim warband in ArmyBuilder v2, I noticed that there
is no +/- option for STRENGTH for any of the heroes. Is this
something I'm doing wrong or a problem with the datafile?
Thanks.

It's you.
Maximum human strength is 4; all Middenheim heroes already have it.

Give the child a type of "Something", then give the parent unit an
option with the following attribute:
chld:Something@Stat1+(Stat2)
The brackets may or may not be required, I'm not sure.

You could have a stat which held the parent's cost, and assign it to the
child as above.

Thanks for the correction......
By the way, do you know if there
is a way to "bold" unit stats that aren't the default? For example,
if that same Middenheimer hero gets a boost in leadership, I would
like his leadership stat to show up in BOLD (printout and display if
possible). Any suggestions?
Thanks.

There isn't, but that's not a bad idea... hmm. Interesting.
It would be fairly easy to do something that prepended and appended, for
example, a * to a stat if it was different, but I think that would be
_too_ obviously noticeble. It's a nice idea you've had there, though.

I am not aware of any WRG data files being created yet. However, they are
very similar to the DBM files (which DO exist), so it should be relatively
straightforward to use the DBM files as a model for how to setup the WRG
files. I wish I had the time to write data files for all these game
systems, but there's only one of me to do everything, so I'm not able to
get them all written as quickly as I'd like.
If you tackle the effort and have any questions, please let me. I'd be
happy to help out in any way I can. And the expert on the DBM files is also
on this forum, so he can also offer some insights and recommendations about
how the DBM files are implemented.
Thanks, Rob

Subject: Re: exporting
There is currently no such facility within Army Builder to do this. At
present, there is no way to extract the unit size limits (min/max), the
complete set of available options for a unit, or anything else like this
from AB. There is also no good way to do this in a nice format from within
ABCreator. If your goal is to get a list of available selections for
creating your own data files, then ABCreator offers some export facilities
that may give you what you need.
To generate the informatoin you specify below, probably your best solution
would be to save the data files out as text files. You can then write a
small tool to read in the text files, extract the fields that you want,
match up all the options to units, and then print out a useful synthesis of
the information. The text files are simple, tab-delimited files, so the
only real work will be in matching up the units/options (via the link
records) and then chasing through instances of the "more" attribute to
identify chained options.
Hope this helps,
Rob

The "forc" attribute only applies to validation attributes assigned to
child units. Regardless of attributes, all child units should behave
normally with respect to composition group assignments. Make sure that the
chariot unit is properly assigned to the Special composition group. If it
is, then it should appear as an entry in the Special group within the
compositon report. Also, be sure that the chariot unit is not being
re-classified as a different compositoin group, either via the "xcmp"
attribute or the present of "mgnt" on the parent unit.

At present, all stats are output using the exact same output formatting,
regardless of their differences. There is currently no way to differentiate
one stat from another and output it specially. I've added this to the todo
list for a future release.

Subject: Re: Question on how to generate stats from a parent unit.
Colen's suggestions were exactly what I would suggest, with two additions.
First, once you pass the child's cost down via a stat, you'll need to use
the "cost" attribute on an option of the child unit to utilize that stat as
the cost.
Secondly, if the parent unit has a complex set of options that influence
its cost and that information needs to be inherited by the child unit, you
have two options. Option #1 is to repeat those options on the child unit
and use the "mirr" and "only" attributes on the child to properly reflect
the option selections for the child. This method is optimal, but it
requires a fair bit of work. Option #2 is much simpler. Instead of treating
the child unit as a separately purchased, complete unit, have the child
unit simply reflect the DIFFERENCES from the parent unit. This method would
include the child units within the parent unit's model count. That way, all
of the options and costing for the child unit would get included in the
parent (nice and simply). The child unit would only reflect the special
differences for the child, including the extra premium cost incurred for
the child unit. This method is MUCH easier to implement, but it's probably
not optimal as a long-term solution.
Hope this helps,
Rob

I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this problem. It all works
great for me on all the computers I have tried this on. However, you are
the second person to report this problem, so something weird is going on. I
spent that past few hours scouring through the code to see if I could find
the problem, but I couldn't find anything amiss. I have modified the code
slightly to make it more explicit in one case, although the explicit case
is also supposed to be the default case (i.e. open the file), so this
should have no impact (unless something is weird on your machine). This
change will be included in the V2.0b update that should be released in a
few days. Please try this again after V2.0b is released and let me know if
it is fixed.
Here is the direct URL to where the V2.0a update is currently available:
http://www.wolflair.com/Army_Builder/Product_Downloads/product_downloads.htm
As a test, please click on the Start menu in the lower left corner, then
click on Run. Then copy and paste the above URL into the dialog that
appears. Click on OK and see if your browser takes you to the proper web
page. If not, then the issue is a configuration problem on your computer.
If it works, then something is screwy with how AB is triggering the
web-page vis-a-vis your system. Hopefully, the problem is a matter of the
default case not being what it's supposed to be, in which case the change
to an explicit reference that I have just made may fix things.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Thanks for the correction......

is a way to "bold" unit stats that aren't the default?

Hope this helps,
Rob
