Subject: Warhammer Fantasy - New files for new version versus old files?

Hey all,

As a fairly longtime user of ArmyBuilder with Warhammer Fantasy
Battle data files, I am curious as if thought has been given to the
new data files that will be necessary for the new release coming out
in October. Since it is such a drastic change and many of us are
thinking about not going with the new changes or maybe playing both.
When the new data files are created maybe they can use a different
naming convention to allow the continued use of 5th edition data
files and allow the use of the 6th edition ones when written at the
same time. I, for one, don't want to be stuck to only using the new
data files or not being able to upgrade and keep using the old ones.
With the publication of the "Ravening Hordes", there has been a lot
of discussion with the people I game with and it seems to be a good
bit of hesitation whether or not to even try the new rules and many
seem intent on doing both. If this is the wrong place for this
concern, please point me to the correct place to address it.

Thanks,

Owen

Subject: Problems with the Kult of Speed data file...........

I think I have found a couple of problems with the Kult of Speed data
file.

1.) - Even though I only choose one WAAAAGH!! Banner for my army (Nob
in Warbosses unit), a validation error comes up and states that I can
only have one banner in my army.
2.) - There is not way of adding an independant character to another
unit. For example, I cannot add a Warboss or Big Mek to a unit of
trukk boyz because as soon as I choose an independant character, they
automatically come with a wartrukk.

Sorry if this has already been reported or if I'm missing
something.......

Subject: Definition to data file conversion error, help!

Okay, this is the first time I've done something like this, so please
bear with me. I need the army builder for a set of games unsupported
by current datafiles (2nd edition 40k to be exact), so I decided to
dive in and see what I could do. I constructed a text definition
file based off of the Army Builder example file. After many tries and
editing, I got it to translate into a definition file. Then I was
using abdata to try to create a datafile so I could start working on
this. The problem I encountered was that it kept on showing invalid
data. Here's the
exact stuff:

How the text file looks:

~Warhammer 40k2
~----------------------
General ~(40k2)
Game=Warhammer 40K2

Now, when I run abdata, it gives the error message:

ERROR - Invalid Data in Header Section: Description[General ~(40k2)]

But the text file I edited was the original tutor file (saved under a
different name of course) so I know that's how it's supposed to
look. The beginning, as far as I can see, is exactly like the
tutor's, barring the stuff after the ~. I've tried everything I can
think of, including deleting the top and seeing if it would reconize
the text that followed. All a no-go. Please help, what am I doing
wrong? Thanks, I appreciate it.

Ok, your file isn't wrong, your method is.

You need to create a definition file (normally called
datadef.<insert extension here>) so probably datadef.4k2

To do this you need to create a text file (which you have done)
and then run abdef <name of text file> <name of datadef file>
so: abdef 40k2datadef.txt datadef.4k2
Which apparently you have also managed to do :-)

Then, you need to create data files such as marines.4k2, eldar.4k2
You can do this two ways:
1. Start up ABCreator and say New (It'll ask which game system by
checking for datadef files) and edit away.

2. Create text DATA files (not text DEF files) and run abdata
on them. So if you create a text file called marines.txt you need:
abdata datadef.4k2 marines.txt marines.4k2

This is all documented extremely well in the Construction Kit
manual (ConstKit.rtf).

You've set yourself an impressive goal for your first set of
AB datafiles. Good Luck :-)

Russell.

Hmm, I would have thought if you want to keep the old data files,
you could just rename them all. Change the extension to something
else and they wont get overwritten. You only have to do it once.
If you really want to get picky, "undef" the datadef file, change
the name of the game to "Warhammer (old)" abdef the file again and
you're done! Two versions of the Warhammer files.

I'm sure this is something that John Connell (keeper of the
Warhammer files) can cope with, especially if there is enough
demand for it. :-)
Judging by the number of people after 40k 2nd ed files, I have no
doubt there'll be demand.

Russell.

Just put the file you downloaded into the dat directory in your AB
folder. It's an actual .40k as opposed to a .AB file. I believe it's
data, but it might be rosters or units. Just check for whichever one
has the other datafiles in it. Admech gets overwritten with each
update if you don't uncheck the option.

Subject: something Epicly different

all -

anyone know what's up with the Epic files? The old ones for 1.4d were
severely inhibited by some of the AB1 constraints, but if i'm not
mistaken might work out much better in AB2. is there an "official"
(read: de facto) maintainer of those files?

[[and yes all you weisenheimers, i know i've stuck my nose in the
tent...]]

thanks,
daniel rothman

Actually, it's a .zip file. I got it from the ab-files egroup, and
downloaded it to the data folder. When I tried to import it, AB told
me that it wasn't a valid AB import file. I suppose this is my
error, so I was wondering what I should do.
