I just uploaded the latest version of the Lord of the Rings data files to
the Datafilesrus site. No problem there the new download works OK. However
does anyone know how to delete the obsolete file?

Just upload the latest file and datafilesrus automatically removes your
previous file. Each user login can host one file at a time.

When I uploaded the new file I switched over to the download area and both
files were showing. I haven’t been back to check since. I’ll take a look
later thanks.

OK sorry to reply to my own message but new evidence has come to light your
honour. I just checked datafilesrus and both files are shown in the
downloads section. Is the deletion automatic or does someone manually clear
them out from time to time. It is just over 24 hours since I did the upload.

Oh yeah, same thing happened to mine. ;)

Can't do anything but leave it for now, except email datafiles and let 'em
know we need to be able to remove older versions of files. As long as you
update the link at wolflair it's not a big deal as most users will
probably never see the datafilesrus site.

If you re-use the name of an existing file, it replaces the existing one.
If you re-use the descriptive name, it replaces the existing one (even if
you use a new filename). However, if you use a new filename and descriptive
name, both files appear.

The person who setup the hosting site was told about this issue a few weeks
ago. For now, he's cleaning things up manually. He said it will be a real
pain to track who uploads which files and then limit the deletion to only
those files that the person uploaded. So I'm guessing he won't be
implementing it right away. :-)

In some ways, it's a good thing to have multiple versions. It provides a
place to store historical versions of the data files. The files are small
and disk space is cheap. :-) And users will rarely ever go to the site
themselves, instead using the updates mechanism within AB (or CV) to
retrieve all files. So having an archive site in place to retrieve old
versions from isn't necessarily a bad thing IMHO. :-)

Hope this helps to clarify,
Rob

Ah. That makes sense. The file name reflects the version number of the files
(we all do that don’t we?) and the description varies with the latest
changes. It is difficult to keep it spot on anyway.

I don’t know how difficult it is to implement but Yahoo allowed either the
file owner or moderators to delete it. It would then be up to the file owner
to keep things tidy but the site administrator would also be able to delete
any files which were becoming untidy.

I see that could be useful provided it does not get out of hand.

Thanks for the explanation.
