Over the weekend, a bug was reported that we first thought was a display issue. However, upon researching it, we’ve discovered that it can actually result in a loss of data if users don’t use our temporary work-around. We’ll be releasing a fix tomorrow that addresses this issue.
While this only appears to be affecting a few users so far, we decided the best course of action would be to immediately flag this to everyone’s attention so our users can avoid losing additional data. We sincerely apologize to all users that have been affected by the bug. If you have any questions about this bug after reading this notice, please ask them here in this thread.
Bug Behavior
This bug was introduced during our last update on April 25. When loading a topic for viewing, or sometimes when splitting a snippet, Realm Works may incorrectly replace a snippet with empty text (which displays as “…” when viewing). Reloading the topic by switching away and returning typically corrects the issue. However, if the user edits the topic without noticing the snippet has become empty and saves the changes, the original snippet data is now lost and replaced with an empty snippet.
Bug Fix and Recommendations
Unfortunately, there’s no way to definitively tell if you’ve been affected by this bug. A patch will be releasing tomorrow that will include a fix for this bug, and in the meantime, we have recommendations to avoid running into this bug prior to the patch and to determine if you’ve lost data.
To avoid being impacted by this bug prior to the fix, take the following steps when editing a topic:
When splitting a snippet during editing, you can take the following steps:
Please Note: If you save your changes while a snippet is empty, the old contents of that snippet will be lost.
To determine if you’ve lost data, we recommend that users look through topics that have been edited since the last update on April 25th to ensure that none of your information was affected. It’s possible that this bug escaped your notice during editing, so a review is encouraged. Unfortunately, if your information has been affected, there is no way to recover the old data other than restoring from a previous backup. You can restore an old version of your realm under the “Manage” tab on the Ribbon Bar.
Again, we apologize if this impacted your work within Realm Works, and we want to thank the users that reported this bug to our development team.
If you have any questions, please ask them here in this thread.

To avoid being impacted by this bug prior to the fix, take the following steps when editing a topic:
- Before editing, scroll through your topic and ensure that none of your snippets have been replaced with “…” when viewing a topic.
- If you see this behavior, navigate away from the topic and return to it, at which point your data should be intact.
- If you’re unsure whether your snippet has been replaced with “…”, we recommend navigating away (without saving) and waiting for the patch to be released on Wednesday.
When splitting a snippet during editing, you can take the following steps:
- Check to see if the second half of the data is empty in the newly created snippet.
- If this occurs, abandon your changes (don’t save your topic).
- Enter Edit mode again. You should now be able to perform the split successfully.
Please Note: If you save your changes while a snippet is empty, the old contents of that snippet will be lost.
