Copy of Bolt and problem with PDF output

One of the oddities of Weird Science (and thus its Broken Earth cousin Super Science) is you can take duplicate powers. One of my players decided to do this, and HL doesn't actually permit it. Well, no biggie I figure, I do a houserule .user and copy Bolt, label it "Bolt 2nd", give it a new idea and source it to the usual things plus the houserule user.

Works fine as far as the actual portfolio goes. However if you try to do a pdf output (and I suspect something similar would happen if you tried to do a print) it sort of throws up and mangles the attack section. I'm guessing the output is looking at something in Bolt, seeing it twice, and having a tizzy.

Any easy way to fix this? I'm guessing this is a CapedCrusader question, but if anyone else knows, happy to hear it from them.

Oh, for reference it throws an error message too:

It's more than just that arcane background. A power regardless of source can be taken multiple times as long as the trapping is different. Bolt is a bit special in that each effect (4 IIRC) can have a different trapping.

This is straight from Clint via a question I asked on the forums right before they died a few months ago.

As you ,mentioned HL is wrong on how this is implemented.

Ah. The only reference in the book is specifically about Weird Science, so I didn't generalize it.

I never even checked that powers were set to only be allowed to be taken once. That's definitely not RAW for Savage Worlds.

Also, the Pinnacle forums are back up, if you hadn't noticed, and Clint is merrily answering questions for us again.

Only reason I knew is the Super Scientist wanted a second boltthrower with a different trapping. Like I said, it seemed simple to address until I tried to output the pdf.

I'm gonna bump this once just on the chance someone comes along who can tell me what the error cause was here.

I can turn off the uniqueness on the Arcane Powers. It's there more as a convenience than anything else. It's always been set up like that.

As far as that error, I am unclear on something. You mention a duplicated Bolt power, and the Attack section. The Attack section is something from the Super Powers Companion, and shows Super Powers that have attack capabilities. It has nothing to do with the Bolt spell.

I misspoke a bit. What I did was this:

1. I created a duplicate of Bolt (Bolt2) with a custom ID number and a source of the Broken Earth .user files and the specific houserule user file.
2. I purchased the New Power edge for the character as an Advance.
3. I then used the new power to take Bolt2. At this point everything looked as I expected it to.
4. I think tried to output a pdf, and got the error message I showed--and the PDF was messed up in a number of ways.

And--just now having tried it again--it works fine. Only thing I can think of is that it has something to do with the new version of HL that dropped in between the two attempts. Bizarre.
