Configure Your Hero Checkbox

Some GMs only allow players to use Paizo materials and not third party materials. It would be helpful if the Configure Your Hero would have a checkbox for each third party that would turn off all materials for that company. Then a player who hasn’t bought the Paizo book but did buy the Data Package can easily know what is Paizo and what isn’t.

Configure Your Hero already has the Publisher prominently listed. I don't think its really necessary for a single check box for each publisher.

Maybe you didn't understand everything in my post. Part of my suggestion is a one click to turn all off/on check box. So you click on Frog Gods and ALL material from Frog Gods is turned off or turned on. Not only would it ensure a player gets all of Frog Gods materials turned on/off but it's a lot quicker to click a master check box than 8-10 or more check boxes.

Go one further, allow "Secondary Updates" type mechanism so a GM can set all the source material allowed and save as a file that they can give their players (or update via URL).

That way a player can just select "Bob's Campaign" and be done with it. And a GM can have a reasonable expectation that his players have the proper Sources/rules selected.

The Configure Hero screen is getting ridiculously "long in the tooth". Being able to export/save a "Default Config" would be nice.

This is all available right now. Open up a new character and set the "Configure Your Hero" settings to your "Bob's Campaign" and then save said character. Remember the settings are all saved in the .por file. :)

Email the .por file to your players to start the new campaign. Been doing this for years and it works out great actually. For me I went one step further and these "Campaign" templates are included in my games House Rules file that my players download. So the Campaign template .por files are always up to date.

But email works just as easy for this type of thing.

So what do you do every few months when new books come out? Take Unchained for instance. It had several options to check and several not to check. Even more complicated when players get books at different times.

Even more so when players have portfolios with 4 to 8 characters each with some not being touched for months.

Keeping things up to date can be a PITA.

Be nice if I could just include it in my secondary updates mechanism and have HL update 'allowed sources' just like other updates...

The only bug in this is that HL should not turn on sources by default for existing characters. Its REALLY annoying to remind my players to go in to existing characters they have played for 6+ Months and turn off books.

I have asked and because too many users don't know how to do "CTRL-K" to turn on a book the rest of us have to deal with turning sources off.

So what I have been doing is setting "Picks" with specific sources into my players characters. Then they can do the Prepare Portfolio for Distribution which auto sets sources to only those with the Picks of specific sources live on the characters. I don't normally mention this as its really a pain to do and not easy. :(

Really the problem would all be solved if "new" sources didn't come "Turned" on for pre-existing characters. Just because a person buys a book does not mean its allowed by the group, campaign, or DM......

LOL its one of the few issues I can't find easy solutions to fix in HL.

New sources shouldn't show up as on for existing characters. Unless that's changed in the past couple years.

An idea for doing the "adding a pick to character for prepare for distribution idea" would be creating something like a simple item for each source (that's the biggest hassle) but then when you create a new set of house rules create a mechanic and bootstrap the appropriate simples to the mechanic and give it a source (and if you want to take the time to make a 1st make it so only 1 "House Rules Sources" can be selected at a time).

This is how HL works by default. For example if you get Unchained license and open up "OLD" characters before you have that license you will clearly see that the Unchained Classes are available. Plus Diseases and Poisons and Upgraded Weapons will all be turned on. :( Even if the campaign you are playing that character in uses Unchained or not.

I did confirm this years ago with Colen that this is designed this way so not a bug. Also that LW will NOT be changing this behavior for the future. :(

I don't agree with this but can't find a way around it yet.... ;)

Yep what I have to do. I tried source marking say a adjustment and putting that adjustment on the hero. But it seems to only pull "one" source not all of them. So yea need to use all those Simple picks which is means to get it to work requires an update of the whole package to my players. It can be done but always looking for something simpler and less work for me. :)

Simpler is always good. Although I've generally been one of those GMs to just allow everything. (I'm too lazy to restrict sources by game).

I require any spells from 1001 spells to be approved by me. Some of those are BANANAS!
Yeah we just started doing the same with Deep Magic spells. We are finding most to be very balanced but very situational spells.

Same as you I asked the players add the new spells slowly with a few new ones per spell level. And to let me know what those are before the game. I like to have a chance to read the rules for a spell before the game so that things run more smoothly.

I am just not into letting everything in from Pathfinder as I like to keep a sort of tone or feeling. Like we are doing Pirates right now and I don't want lazer guns showing up in my pirate campaign. Cannons and muskets are cool but not Chain saws.

So I think you will find it not too strange for groups to have a "set" list of allowed books for a campaign.

Yeah I can see that. I just assume my players will use their best judgement.

You must understand. If I catch my players purposely screwing with stuff, well they will regret it, in game and out.

Ok, but it is hilarious. Players using their best judgement seems like an oxymoron. LOL Not just as players but in character. hehehe

You may not have meant to but you did give me a good laugh for tonight. :D
