Comparing damage values

Is there a way to compare damage dice from wMain to determine which one is better?

This is for a template that has a damage table for a granted attack, but if the base creature already has the attack it uses either the damage value it already has or the table value depending which one is better.

There are so many other things that could determine "better" - criticals, special abilities, etc., that it's really a judgement call on the part of the GM as to which is the best version of an attack, depending on the combination of templates, races, and class/feat/etc. abilities. So we haven't worried about this for the templates we've added - we've just added the new attacks and let the GM decide which ones to actually use.

Hmm... good point. "Better" can mean different things. Ok, I will ignore it. :)

As I think about it, I guess a crude metric for "better" could be the mean of the die roll. So for 1d8 its mean value is 4.5, but for 2d4 its mean is 5 (2*2.5). So in this case you could say 2d4 is "better" than 1d8. Of course I am ignoring here the statistics associated with multiple roles, the development of bell curves, etc. :/
