Is it possible to edit the layout of the character sheet / create our own character sheets for Hero Lab? The default sheet is kind of a mess, especially with special abilities getting cut off half way through a description, sections being spread across pages and / or columns, poor spacing in the gear section, etc.

Sure... it's very possible to create custom sheets. Several people have done it and shared them with the community, and a couple of those (for the Pathfinder system) are automatically available to you through the Hero Lab update system.

If you go to File -> Save Custom Output you'll see the alternative sheets that are automatically available.

To create your own, you need a working knowledge of HTML, CSS and XSL. There's some info in the Hero Lab manual on how to get started.
