Can't export to D20 Pro

Remaker

New member
I'm trying to export a Pathfinder character to D20 Pro. I go to File->Out Extensions-> D20Pro Output

I'm then asked to supply a file name, but I always get a "The file name is not valid" error. Nothing I try works, not even the default name of 'character.'

I can't find anything in the manual about naming conventions. What do I have to do?

There aren't any naming conventions , other than the regular windows ones - you should be able to use any name you like. I usually use the default name (character.hld20pro) when saving files, and that works great.

Are you running Hero Lab under Windows, or doing something unusual like running it under WINE?

I too am having problems exporting a Pathfinder character from Hero Lab v3.6a to D20 Pro v2.1.0. If I try to change the file name from the default "character.hld20pro," I get the same error message that Remaker gets. If I don't touch the file box and just save using the default name, Hero Lab saves a file. However, when I am in the D20 Pro program, when I try to import "character.hld20pro," I get the following error message "Unable to import from D:\Downloads\character.hld20pro
Unable to load document."

At this point, I haven't been able to determine whether the problem lies in Hero Lab's export or in D20 Pro's import function.

TBKenie: Any file you exported from Hero Lab 3.6 would give that error - updating to HL3.6a should fix it.

If you change the filename to something short like "hello.xml", does that work? Or does that still give you an error in the "save file" dialog?

Also, what operating system are you using? It's possible the OS might make a difference here...

I am running 3.6a Hero Lab on Windows XP SP3 with the latest patches (as of 13 May 2010).

I can export using the D20 Pro extension if I don't change the default name OR if I add a ".xml" to the file name.

On a side note, according to a response in the D20Pro forums, something changed on their end (v2.1.0) so importing from Hero Labs is broken and the the devs are aware of the situation. I can't check the import from WotC's 4E character builder into D20Pro.

I just figured out what's happening here - if you have "Hide extensions for known file types" checked in the windows Folder Options, this problem happens. If you uncheck it, everything is fine. I'll see what I can do to fix this.

TBKenie: As far as I'm aware, HL3.6a should import correctly into d20pro now. Are you still having problems after updating to the latest version?

Colen: Thank you for the help on isolating one of the problems; the hide extensions in the windows folder option allows me to export from Hero Lab. Now if only I could get d20pro to import the file... (waiting for a fix on their end as apparently d20pro v2.1 is broken)

The fix for the d20Pro side is in testing right now and will be in release 2.1.1

There is still a few issues the Colen is working on for the Herolab side of the issue on some creatures that I cannot fix from the d20Pro side

FYI: I am the coder in d20Pro that does the importers.

Any chance this also incorporates 4e, or is this just generic HL to generic d20?

With the DDI update breaking everything, not having any (meaningful) way to add/update characters to D20 is beyond annoying.

So from what I can see, both developers of Herolab and d20pro are pointing fingers at each other on this breakdown. "Its not really our fault, its something they did, but we are working on it, but have to wait on them"

Weak sauce.

Dragonladytoo, that's not at all accurate. The current situation is as follows:

1) There's a bug in Hero Lab's d20pro export function that means some Pathfinder characters (apparently those with an unusual space or reach characteristic) don't export properly. This is a bug in Hero Lab, and will be addressed in the next release of the Pathfinder data files (later this week).

2) Windows apparently doesn't like you saving files with long file extensions (like .hld20pro) if you have a certain setting enabled, unless the software jump through certain hoops. We're now jumping through those hoops in Hero Lab, and this'll be fixed in v3.6b (out very soon). Until then, users can disable the "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Windows Explorer "View" options to make everything work.

Both of these are issues in Hero Lab, and they will both be resolved very shortly. Wes tells me there are some separate issues in d20pro, which they are fixing in their upcoming patch.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation. There are issues with both sides of the export/import, and we're fixing the problems in tandem.

IMHO, the developers of HeroLab and D20 Pro are doing a great job of fixing and working on reported issues. They have responded faster than some of the other competing products (i.e., Kloogewerks, RPGXplorer, eTools) that I have purchased in the past for the task of tracking character data and virtual tabletop gaming.

Yep, there were some issues in the d20Pro importer of the HL exported files as well. Mostly things that are beastiary related, or instances of things we did not foresee when building the importer.

These should all be fixed now. I just did some more tweaks last night and d20Pro is about to start our official in-house testing. Hopefully we will have a release by Monday, but don't quote me on that. We added other functionality and it needs to be tested before release.

I am sorry if people thought we were fingering pointing. There were issues on both sides of the pond, and we are bothing addressing them as quickly as possible.

I'll be honest, I have worked with other companies before between two products and I must say working with Lone Wolf and Colen in particular has been a welcomed change. The peeps at Lone Wolf Development are awesome with no ego's tripping upping the process of releasing great products to the customers!

Both Hero Lab for Pathfinder and D20Pro (v2.1.1) have been updated. I tried a few test exports from Hero Lab Pathfinder version to D20Pro v2.1.1, only the last character (Pathfinder alchemist) choked on an error of "3d6+3 fire" wasn't a valid die expression. Once I edited out the 3d6+3 fire bomb line, the character imported fine.

Thank You.

However, I suppose I should have read the entire thread before posting ...

I didn't see that the original post was "Pathfinder" specific.

So, when might we be able to export 4e characters to D20pro ?
