Buying HL in a B&M store

Quick question for your Hero Lab folks - I saw Hero Lab fore sale at my local gaming store, and I would prefer to purchase it from them in order to support my local businesses.

However, I noticed the d20 System symbol on the packaging, with the indication that this particular Hero Lab included data for the d20 System.

Since I would prefer to get either a Cortex or Pathfinder license as my "freebie" license when purchasing Hero Lab, I'm wondering if the system is set in stone when I buy a physical copy of Hero Lab?

That is, if I buy Hero Lab from my local store, do I get the option to choose my license, or will it automatically give me the d20 license?

I would read THIS post before activating as the older store copies could activate d20 first if you are not careful.

Basically you buy the store copy to get the license but then you should download and install the latest version from HL. Then make sure you have the Demo version of say Pathfinder (or what ever game system you want) working before you activate the license.

Absolutely. I was pretty sure that choosing an alternate license would be possible, but the little quirk you mention is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to check for.

It seems there are still a few ancient copies of Hero Lab floating through the system, and they don't know about newer game systems that we've released. When you install an older version of HL, you'll be prompted to check for updates and download the latest version. Make sure you do that before activating your license. As long as you do that, you'll have all available game systems to choose from during license activation.
