Bard + Shield

Hey there, I am new to Pathfinder, but I think that I have found a problem.
I'm playing a level 1 Bard, which has Shield Proficiency under its Feats.
When I buy and equip either a Buckler Shield, or a Small Wooden Shield, I incur a minus one penalty to my melee attack rolls. This doesn't make any sense to me, if the class is proficient with the Shield, why am I still taking the Penalty?

I am going to guess you are using a rapier with the weapon finesse feat? If so it says "If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls."

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Right on one. I totally missed that part.
Guess I won't be using a shield. heh. ;-)
Thanks for clearing that up for me, sorry for the trouble.
