Authoring Kit questions

G'day,

First I apologize if these questions have been answered elsewhere (but I could not find it)

I purchased Hero Labs for the Pathfinder features and have been so impressed I got some friends to purchase it. ;)

I got the Authoring Kit licence … and I have some questions.

1) How do I download user created content via the program? (I can’t find a button within the program to do so.
2) On the front page it still lists the Authoring Kit as a “sample”, but when I launch it is not in demo mode. (Is that the reason I can’t see a user content download section?)
3) Shadowrun is the other game of choice for me and I was wondering if it was coming as an officially supported game or if there was a user created file?

Hey there and welcome to the party.

To add in user created content, just down load the files, unzip them, and drop them into the folder of the system the file is for, ie pathfinder, d20. The folder can be found where ever you installed HL at. HL will automatically read in all the files in that folder on start up.

The authoring kit is purchased seperately and used to create new game systems. if you want to add content to pathfinder you can use the editor that comes with the pathfinder system.

I cant speak to the shadowrun system, but there has been talk about it.

The Shadowrun thread is here. Short version is, they're working on it. Even though they've been talking to Catalyst about it for a while, they only got the license and started work on it recently. As a long-time supporter of Hero Lab, all I can say is 'Be patient.' They're a small operation and it takes them a while to get a project done, but it's worth the wait.

As mentioned above, adding user-created content to existing game systems does NOT require the Authoring Kit, unless that game system is Savage Worlds or D&D 4E. Both of those game systems are included with the Authoring Kit. To add content to other game systems, use the integrated Editor, which is accessible via the Tools menu within Hero Lab.

The "Sample" game system is exactly that - a sample set of data files with complete code. The "Sample" provides you with a working game system that can be used as a reference and/or template when writing your own data files for a new game system. The "Sample" is built upon the Skeleton data files that Hero Lab automatically starts you with when creating data files for a new game system.

We hope to have Shadowrun data files into Beta testing before the end of the year. Work has begun on Shadowrun, but it's a highly complex game system, so it's going to take us awhile to get it all implemented properly. Once the Shadowrun data files are completed, they will be available just like all the other game systems we support.

Hmm ... I would not have purchased the developers kit if I was aware you did not need it to import user created files.

I am not crying foul, I rushed in and purchased without fully investigating first, but I would recommend that this part / feature of the program be explained "clearer". The misunderstanding may be all my fault, but I doubt I am the only person to make the mistake, so it should warrant a re-look. ;)

This being said, the Pathfinder component is excellent, I will be using it a lot and I am eager to see the Shadowrun rule set come to fruition.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to all future developments :D
 
I'm not sure of the details of your purchases, and there are limits imposed by the ordering system we have in place. However, it *may* be possible to make adjustments since you purchased something you didn't need. I can then investigate and see if there's something we can do for you.
