Seems that the Roster notes aren't stored in the xml files. Is this by design? Are there any infomation about the xml format available?

I assume you're talking about the saved roster format. This isn't
documented in AB3.0b, but a full XML DTD will be included in the AB3.1
authoring kit.

The roster notes can be found as PCDATA in the 'notes' child element of the
'roster' element of the saved roster file.
