Activating Source tree with file?

Is there a way to turn a source on or off based on the presence of a user file?

I am doing a couple of books for a company. I'd like to do the books as separate files and make the source active based on which file is present. That way, I could provide 1 sources.1st file along with each of the book files.

For example:
Book Publisher
Book 1 - Default in sources.1st file to selectable="no", if book1.user is present, then selectable="yes"
Book 2 - Default in sources.1st file to selectable="no", if book2.user is present, then selectable="yes"

is something like that possible?
