I am trying to set up a parent Unit that can have between 1-5 models
total between 4 choices for child units. How can I offer the 4
choices, but limit the total number of models chosen from them to 5
or less?

Use the "coun" attribute on all the child units and specify a total unit
size of 1:5 for the parent unit. This way, all the child units will count
towards the total size of the overall unit. It is still possible to achieve
a unit of more than 5 models this way under certain conditions. If that
occurs, though, AB will automatically recognize the problem and flag it as
a validation error, so the user will always be properly warned about going
over the limit.

Assign the choices all the same category then limit
the number of category choices with ocat
