If I want to create an AB file using rules for a homebrew Space
Marine chapter, can I just make a copy of the SM file with a
different name and start editing it? Or do i have to start it from
scratch?

Yes you can copy a record and rename it. But depending how the data
file is constructed it is a lot more involved than that. Most
likely you will need to rename quite a few files if the data file.
What I would suggest is starting from scratch and just copying a
file manually with everything, yes it is more data entry, but it
saves on trying to figure out what link is messing up.

I'm afraid not. While you could just make a copy of the file, it would
still hold the same data as the old file - so when AB tried to read
everything in, there would be a huge number of conflicts and it wouldn't
work. :(

The way to go is by using 'augmentations'. I believe the Construction Kit
tutorial covers them, so try looking there.

One thing you COULD do (but I don't really recommend it) is to copy the
current SM file and then assign new unique ids to all of the units,
options, etc. If you renamed everything, as well as all reference to those
records within the SM file, you could make this work. But I'm not sure if
that would actually be worthwhile pursuing as a solution.

Thanks, Rob
