A very stupid question...

I'm creating a Pathfinder Society character for the very first time.

I have my PFS ID number, but once I change to select the PF Organized Play Character option and exit that window, the program will not allow me to enter the number into the text box.

What am I doing incorrectly?

Please detail the exact series of steps you use, because I'm not able to reproduce this behavior.

I open Hero Lab, it offers me the opening "create a character" screen. I select the checkbox for Pathfinder Organized Play, click Okay, and then click the text box where the number goes and I can enter one without issue.

I can load a Pathfinder system portfolio/character, click on "Configure Hero", follow the remaining steps, and still enter the number.
