So, some of my group is really liking the look of the new Drakewarden Ranger. Most of it looks fairly straightfoward, except that it gains a Drake Companion animal companion. Not only that, but it contains an array to be able to select the energy type of Drake. AND THEN there's a later ability that references that choice.
Anyone want to point me in the direction of something that might do something similar? |

It's not released yet, but check out this file for the Artificer. The Steel Defender in there works very similarly to the Drakewarden, so the code should be quite usable for it. Search that file for everything related to the Steel Defender and try to replicate it for the Drakewarden.

Another thing; if there are selections for the Drake, I'd use subraces for that. Make a basic drake, then subraces for that drake that apply the different chooseable traits. I did the same thing when I built the different types of creatures summonable by the Tasha's spells.
EDIT: The Dragonborn works similarly; it has selections that pull/push various damage types to different abilities of the main race.
