Another problem with multiple versions of Hero lab open at one time would be the GM tools not being able to read/manipulate the contents of the portfolio like they could if the portfolios were open in a single instance of hero lab.

You can have the Tactical Console open for each of the instances of Hero Lab. With two each of HL and TC open at once, it appears as four tabs on the taskbar but mousing over shows what each one is.
The HL that opened the Tactical Console is the one which can have enemies added (loaded from another portfolio to) or removed from (clear multiple - enemies). I've not used the other GM tools, aside from a HL Portfolio specific to the summon monsters. That one summons whatever the caster is bringing in, makes the relevant augment summoning type checks, and then saves for input by the window where the good guys and bad guys are already both within. |

Yes, you can have one tactical console open for each portfolio open in hero lab. That is no different than having 1 Large portfolio with all the characters in one. More memory requirements with no gain.
1 tactical console with multiple portfolios (allowing logical grouping ) means less memory requirements and ability to run a combat amongst multiple groups. |
