odd symbols and out put errors

randomly, my critical hit symbol has changed from an X, to the symbol you see above. in addition to this there have been numerous errors with descriptions of feats and items, missing symbols, random periods, and so on. when printed the page has strings of random symbols throughout. dose any one have any idea how to fix this?
