I've noticed here and there where a space goes missing, but nothing that bad. I chalk it up to the formatting of the PDF. Don't know if I'm right, but that's my guess. I know that PDFs can be formatted in weird ways sometimes.

Try a different PDF reader and see if it makes a difference.

I figured out the issue. It was the PDF itself.

It's likely an image scan instead of a full OCRd image or converted copy of the original manuscript. PDF Readers are trying to interpret the text and can grab the characters but can't interpret the spacing properly.
