In working on the Candlekeep monsters, I’ve noticed a change in how WotC is handling spellcasting in stat blocks.

Up until now, they’ve either been Spellcasting or Innate Spellcasting. Regular Spellcasting has the monster/NPC use spell slots and have levels in a particular class. Innate Spellcasting used no material components and would grant individual spells each cast at will, 3/day, 1/day, etc.

Now it looks like they’ve ditched the distinction altogether (though some casters still say they don’t need material components). There no class levels or spell slots indicated, and everything is At Will, 3/day, etc. Spellcasting is now shown in the Actions section of the stat block, instead of the special abilities section above the Actions.

Hero Lab can handle this change, except for displaying it in the Actions section. The way I procedurally dump monsters in will need to be tweaked, since I relied on the distinction between Innate and regular Spellcasting as part of my process.

So this is a heads up that monster spellcasting may be different going forward, and that the Spellcasting section of the stat blocks will be in its original place, rather than in the Actions like they are in the book.

Everything will be functionally correct, it just won’t match the book in looks 100%.
