The Soldier Champions are childs to the Soldier parent.
I can add 4 more soldiers and upgrade 3 of them to Soldier Champions (total squad size is 5 soldiers and 5 champions)
I can upgrade any Constrictor Rifle to a cannon for a max of 5. I have the cannons member of two exclusion groups one it shares with the rifle (set as remainder for that group) with a max of # and the other with a max of 5.
If I understand you right, the group with max 5 should be a unit stat with max set to 5 that I can decrement in a postlink script each time I upgrade a champion.
I certainly like this over what I was trying to do.
