Crash when loading latest version of Pathfinder

Note from Colen - please see my first post on page 2 for a temporary workaround to this issue, while we work on a fix.

Hi,

After I downloaded the new updated version of HL and imported it, I received and error message when I went to launch HL. See below.

HeroLab.exe has encountered an error and needs to close.

Please email a DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WERE DOING, in as much detail as possible, along with this message, to support@wolflair.com. PLEASE NOTE: Unless you tell us what you were doing, we won't have enough information to fix this problem!

Right click and choose "Copy to Clipboard" to copy these details, or you can find them in this file: C:\DOCUME~1\Peter\LOCALS~1\Temp\lwderror1380.txt

I've got this running on two Windows 7 machines, and it runs fine, however, I see this same error on my box that's running Windows XP.

The bad read error is the same type of error I got when I was trying to create custom game systems, and put a bmp w/ palette.

Just trying to provide some input.

Thanks for reporting this - I'm looking into this now. Is anyone getting the crash under Windows 7? Or just Vista / XP?

Edit: Also, when exactly does the crash occur? Right after you hit the "Load" button? Or does another message like "Compiling Data Files for Game System" appear first? I've been unable to reproduce the problem on any of the machines I've tried it on here, so any extra details would be very helpful. :(

For those of you encountering the problem, please try this:

1) Make sure Hero Lab is closed
2) In any web browser except internet explorer, download this file: http://www.wolflair.com/download/hp/pathfinder.hl
3) Double-click the file once downloaded and follow the prompts to import it
4) Try to load the Pathfinder game system

Does it load properly, or do you get the same error as before, or a different error?

Thanks for your patience and help resolving this issue.

Nope, DL'ed that with Firefox, then double clicked, imported, shows the PF logo/update.. and gets to 'building' before crashing out, same message

Tintros (or anyone else), do you have any third-party addons installed for Pathfinder? I.e. any .user files in the pathfinder folder?

For the people experiencing this crash, here's what I'd like you to try:

1) First, here's the previous version of the Pathfinder data files. If you download and import this, do you still get the crash?

http://www.wolflair.com/download/hp/pathfinder_rollback.hl

(Close Hero Lab, download the file, then double-click to import it. When you're asked if you want to import the older game system, say "yes", and don't allow Hero Lab to download an update to it.)

2) If you still experience the crash, download and install this previous version of Hero Lab. Do you still get the crash?

http://www.wolflair.com/download/hp/hl41_win_install.exe

Please let me know whether you still get the crash after each step above, as that'll help me figure out exactly what's going on here. I've been unable to reproduce the problem myself after multiple tests, so hopefully the links above will help get people up and running for their games at the weekend.

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the inconvenience.

I am on an XP machine, I have the Community Bestiary files, and it says, "Compiling User Files" right before it gives me the same error message. This did not happen until after I had updated to the latest PF files.

I am trying your suggestion to download and install the previous version of Pathfinder.

I hope that was helpful to you.

I'm on Vista and the old one works fine. I got into my pathfinder file perfectly. So it has to be something in 7.7 that's is causing it to crash.

It was the first download that I used and all 3 of my Pathfinder are up and running, 2 of them has user files in them the other one does not.

I'm using win XP. I was getting the crash with the current version of Herolab and the current pathfinder files. I installed the rollback file and no longer get the crash.

Just wanted to update and clarify a few things with this post.

On my win XP machine my install of Herolab was a clean fresh install, after having the issues I uninstalled Herolab and removed all files from my PC. I then tried installing Herolab many times using the new Pathfinder files and that caused the crashes upon launch. Then after installing the rollback file listed above, 7.5 I believe it worked just fine.

Now I just installed the newest version of Herolab and the newest Pathfinder files on my laptop a Win Vista machine and they worked just fine.
