(Drop Dead Studios) Spheres of Power: Official Support Thread

Hi everyone,

The Spheres of Power and Spheres of Might data packages for Hero Lab are now available for purchase. This thread will serve as both an announcement channel and a support resource. I am TheIronGolem, the code monkey responsible for the packages

I do not work for Lone Wolf Development, and they are in no way involved with or responsible for this package (though they were kind enough to permit me to have my support thread here on their forums - thanks, guys!). In other words, don't yell at them when SoP and/or SoM doesn't work, yell at me.

(EDIT: I have retired from Hero Lab work. The Spheres project is now in the care of the poster WhiteUnggoy.).

FAQ - General

What is Spheres of Power?
It's a very cool, 3rd-party magic system for Pathfinder, published by Drop Dead Studios. It includes 11 magic-using classes who can use any of twenty "spheres" of magic. A "sphere" is somewhat like a school of magic in PF or D&D. You spend "talents" to gain access to a sphere, which grants you one or two magical powers. You can then spend further talents to enhance those abilities, gain new abilities within that sphere, or gain access to a whole new sphere.

What is Spheres of Might?
Spheres of Might takes the system of spheres and talents introduced by Spheres of Power, and applies them to martial combat. In this system, each sphere represents training in a broad type of fighting style (such as Boxing, Sniper, or Wrestling) or equipment (such as Alchemy or Traps). Like in SoP, you can then spend talents to gain new abilities within a sphere, enhance existing sphere abilities, or gain a new sphere. There is a particular focus on granting martial characters a variety of interesting and useful options both in and out of combat.

What is Champions of the Spheres?
Champions of the Spheres introduces character options that blend the magic and martial sphere systems. It includes three character classes that can gain both magic and combat talents, as well as several archetypes for other Spheres classes that grant the use of magic talents on martial classes or vice versa.

Does Spheres of Power require any other data packages to be installed?
Yes, you need Ultimate Magic and the Advanced Player's Guide. This is because Spheres of Power refers to resources from those packages, such as the Versatile Channeler feat, Alchemist and Magus class abilities, etc.

Also, if you have a Shifter with the Impaling Charge trait then it is recommended that you have Classic Monsters Revisited, because without it you will be given a "placeholder" version of the Impaling Charge feat instead of the real version that contains the actual feat description.

Additionally, some of the sphere-specific splatbooks (most notably the Shapeshifter's Handbook) require the Pathfinder Pack to be installed, because they make use of material from Dreamscarred Press.

I installed the package, but I don't see any SoP/SoM content like classes or feats.
Make sure your portfolio has Spheres of Power and/or Spheres of Might activated as a source. Press CTL-K to bring up the Configure Hero menu, look for "Spheres of Power/Might" under Drop Dead Studios, and make sure it's checked.

Will there be future updates to these packages?
Yes, I do periodic updates to fix bugs, introduce previously-missing elements where possible, and just generally improve the experience. I try to have an update to each core package out on a roughly monthly basis, other projects and real life permitting. Expansions tend to get updated as I find and fix bugs.

How do I specify my character's Casting Ability or Practitioner Ability?
On the Magic Sphere Abilities tab, look for the Casting Ability selector near the upper right corner of the panel.

On the Combat Sphere Abilities tab, look for the Practitioner Ability selector near the upper right corner of the panel.

My CAM/PM isn't getting added to duration/damage/save DC on this sphere/class ability!
You probably haven't chosen your casting/practitioner ability yet (see above). Even if you're playing a class like Armorist that normally has no choice of casting/practitioner ability, we ask you to choose anyway, because you might have your GM's permission to use a non-standard ability.

But my DM follows the rules as written in their game and doesn't want us to have free choice of casting/practitioner ability.
No problem. Although the package makes you pick your casting/practitioner ability, it also enforces the "correct" choice through warning messages. For example, if you're a single-classed Armorist then you'll have a warning message on your character telling you that you are only allowed to select Wisdom.

Well, my DM lets us pick any casting/practitioner ability, so I don't want to see that warning.
We've got you covered, too. Enable the "Free choice of casting/practitioner ability" houserule, and that warning message will be suppressed. This and other houserules can be found in the Configure Hero menu (CTL-K).

(SoP) I want to give my character a Sphere Wand or Sphere Staff, but I don't see those in the list of magic items.
Sphere Wands and Staves were added in version 1.8, so make sure you have updated to the latest version. Once you have version 1.8 or higher, you can create a Sphere Wand or Staff from the Magic tab by adding "Sphere Wand" or "Sphere Staff" and customizing it with Spheres and Talents.

Also, these items are still using their names from an older version of SoP. You may know Sphere Staves and Sphere Wands by their newer names, Implements and Spell Engines respectively. These items will likely be renamed in a future update.

Are there Adjustments for sphere effects placed on my character by another caster/practitioner?
Yes. I've added many Adjustments to the package to represent such effects. There are also Adjustments that let you apply bonuses or penalties to your caster level (either with a particular talent, a particular sphere, or overall), as well as the number of spell points and magic talents your character has. You can also add "temporary spell pools", which give you an additional reserve of spell points (like those provided by a wand).

(SoP) What about Rituals? Or the spellcrafting system?
Unfortunately, Rituals and Spellcrafting are not supported at this time.

Can I create my own SoP/SoM content in the editor?
You sure can! The package adds a "Spheres of Power" or "Spheres of Might" tab to the editor, where you'll find subtabs for creating SoP-and-SoM-specific elements such as Talents.

(SoP) What's this "Fractional Caster Level" houserule?
Fractional CL means that when you take levels in more than one Low-caster or Mid-caster class, you will end up with a slightly higher CL than normal, because each class level is treated as giving you 50% or 75% of a caster level (as opposed to the standard method of either giving you a full CL or nothing), and those fractions are then added up (with any leftover fraction being ignored). It's basically the "Fractional BAB" variant rule from 3.5's Unearthed Arcana, applied to caster level.

(SoP) I have an Armorist. How do I make Bound or Summoned Equipment?
Any Armorist (well, technically any character that has either Bound Equipment or Summoned Equipment as a class ability) should get a new tab called "Bound/Summoned Equipment". On this tab, you can designate items as Bound or Summoned equipment. Items so designated will receive the following benefits: they'll be marked as masterwork items (if they weren't already), they'll be marked as "free" so that they don't count against your character's total wealth, they'll have their weight set to zero if not equipped (because we assume the item is either being used by someone else or simply not currently manifested), and will be findable by any other special abilities that interact with Bound or Summoned gear (such as the Warden archetype's Deadly Guardian ability).

(SoP) I picked a Bound/Summoned item from the menu, but the selector doesn't show my weapon/armor/shield/staff.
When you first purchase an item that will be Bound or Summoned gear, make sure to select it as a Custom Item (under the top heading on the tab labeled "Magic, Custom & Masterwork Weapons/Armor". Those items can be customized, and that is what the tab looks for.

(SoP) I have a character with the Alteration sphere. How do I apply a Shapeshift effect?
When you have the Alteration sphere, the Transformation feat, or the "Alteration: Shapeshift" Adjustment, you'll see an Alteration tab on your character. On this tab is a table labeled "Shapeshifts" where you can create and customize Shapeshift effects. You can specify the form and traits granted by the shapeshift, and can even tell Hero Lab whether the effect is being applied by yourself or another caster (which affects form/trait prerequisites accordingly). You can create as many shapeshift effects as you want and then turn on only the one currently affecting your character (if any). This lets you easily switch between forms on the fly without having to stop during gameplay to rebuild your character.

(SoM) I have an Armiger. How do I create my Customized Weapons?
The first step to creating an Armiger's Customized Weapon is adding the weapon to your character as if it were any other weapon, through the Weapons tab. Once you have done this, go to the Customized Weapons tab, which should appear on any character who has the Customized Weapons class feature. On this tab, you can choose between the categories of customized weapons (single weapon, two weapons, ammunition stack, etc). Once you do so, you will see a form that will let you designate which weapon on your character is being designated as the customized weapon, select the talents the weapon will grant, and even rename the weapon. When you're finished, whenever you have the weapon equipped (or both weapons, in the case of paired weapons), the weapon's talents will appear on your character.

(SoM) I have a Technician. How do I create my Inventions?
Unfortunately, Technician Inventions have not been implemented yet. I really wanted to make them a release feature, but they are extremely complicated and require a great deal of UI work that would have added months to SoM's release. I hope to get Inventions working in a future update to Spheres of Might.

(SoP) Wait a minute...Bear Sphere?
Yes.

I have another question or problem with the Spheres of Power and/or Spheres of Might package.
Post your issue in this thread, or send an email to dropdeadstudios dot herolab at gmail dot com, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

I have a non-Hero Lab question or problem regarding Spheres of Power and/or Spheres of Might.
I can only give you answers regarding the Hero Lab packages. Rules questions, customer-service issues, and other issues not related to Hero Lab should be directed to Drop Dead Studios.

HOW TO STAY UP TO DATE
Updates for all Spheres of Power/Might data files come out periodically, which is how you get bug fixes, post-publication errata, and the occasional new feature or UI improvement. It's important that you keep your SoP/SoM files up to date with the latest version. It's also important to note that the version of the package you download from DrivethruRPG is NOT necessarily the latest version (DDS does post newer ones on occasion, but I make updates too often for it to be feasible for them to do this every time). However, if you look in the .zip file that you receive from Drivethru, you'll find a readme file. This file contains a step-by-step walkthrough showing you how to enter a URL into Hero Lab, after which Hero Lab will use that URL to detect any available updates when it starts up. You will need to do this for every SoP/SoM data pack you install, because they all get checked for updates independently.

If you're getting an error from Hero Lab after installing SoP/SoM (or sometimes after updating Hero Lab itself or the Pathfinder files), this is far and away the most likely thing you need to do to fix the problem.

SoP - Known Issues as of version 1.46
  • Sphere Cleric: Necromantic Focus sometimes gives the wrong bonus sphere (Life/Death). This appears to be due to the "positive/negative" selector being hidden and stuck on the "wrong" choice for characters whose channeling type is set by their deity or alignment. I can't really fix this as it is a function of how Hero Lab handles channeling selection. As a workaround, you can temporarily remove your deity and set your alignment to Neutral, then set the "positive/negative" selector to the appropriate choice and restore your deity/alignment.
  • Some users with Sphere Clerics or Sphere Oracles are unable to choose bonus talents for their domain or patron. This has been determined to be a bug with the "Extend Thing" mechanism that occurs when Things from LW products not included in the user's license are extended (an example from the Community Pack is the Kalfore archetype, which extends two Witch Hexes from Player's Companion #13). This is a bug acknowledged by Lone Wolf that is scheduled to be fixed in the next release of Hero Lab.
  • Fractional Caster Level houserule - For multiclass characters who have levels in Low-Caster or Mid-Caster classes who are treated as High-Casters with specific spheres, total Caster Level with those sphere(s) may be slightly too high. It is recommended you check the caster levels manually, and if incorrect use the "Spherecasting: Caster Level (Sphere)" adjustment to correct it.
  • [Geomancer's Handbook] Selecting the Metal package with Expanded Geomancing does not bootstrap the base Metal abilities, and consequently does not fulfill prerequisites for other Metal talents. As a workaround, try selecting Metal as your "base" package and use Expanded Geomancing to select your "real" starting package.
  • [Mentalist's Handbook] The Gadgeteer casting tradition is missing. This is because the tradition includes the Obvious Enhancements drawback, which appears in the Enhancer's Handbook. This was creating an unwanted dependency, so I have removed the entire tradition for the time being. I will add it back later when I have found a cleaner solution for handling the absence of the Enhancer's Handbook. In the meantime, you can always manually add the component Drawbacks of the tradition.
  • [Conjurer's Handbook] The Awakener archetype is not included in this package. This is because I did not want Spheres of Might to be a required package, and I have not yet figured out a workable solution for putting Might-class archetypes in Power books or vice versa.

Any word on when this will be available?

LonePaladin March 27th, 2016 07:27 PM

I'm having an odd technical issue, and it looks like it's time to submit it to the masses. Maybe ShadowChemosh can figure it out.

In a nutshell, I can't get the SoP options to appear. The files are all there, but they don't seem to be working.

I've tried manually adding the .hl file. I've tried adding the URL to the XML file via the Update page. I've checked my data folder, and I find all the required files. SoP shows up on the list of updates, just like it should. Everything looks like it should be working, but when I make a new character and go to the list of available options, I don't see anything by DDS.

Here are all the details for the relevant files, should you want to check against a working copy.

I've been trading e-mails with the developer for a while now, and he's hit a wall. He asked me to make sure I wasn't accidentally installing them into an alternate copy of the PF folder, but I only have the one.

TheIronGolem March 27th, 2016 07:49 PM

Indeed, we've gone over all the basics that I can think of. It seems like everything is installed properly, but the Configure Hero screen isn't showing the SoP options. I can't shake the feeling that there's some simple and obvious problem that I'm missing here.

TheIronGolem March 27th, 2016 07:51 PM

Come to think of it, what do you see if you go to Tools -> Manage Third-Party Updates?

Just going to ask a dumb question. The files you have listed above are located in your c:\programData\HeroLab\data\Pathfinder folder? Assuming windows.

Another way to look is to start HL and go to the Tools menu within Hero Lab and choosing Explore Folders->Program Data Folder. The files appear in the directory that opens?

In addition to other items, I see "Spheres Of Power 1.0 (V1.0, 15 files)".

No, they're not in that folder, they're in the Game System Data folder (C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder).

I've tried a couple other ways to get the data, including directly opening the .hl file (after downloading the updated version that turned up today), using the Import File option in the game-system-selection screen, re-downloading via the File Updates window, and using the Tools>View Game Updates option.

Each time, it acts like everything's okay, except that nothing actually changes.

Out of curiosity, I ran Tools>Diagnostics>Checksum Data Files. I trimmed out everything that wasn't relevant to SoP. Here's what's left:

I'm tempted to completely uninstall HL and try it from a fresh installation. There are probably deprecated data files sitting around in there anyway.

TheIronGolem March 28th, 2016 07:11 PM

That might be a good idea. I'd also recommend making SoP the first non-LWD package you install. If it works, then try adding any others you have back, one at a time, and see if any of them appear to break SoP.

I'm testing converting a character over to Spheres. I'm making an Incanter with 17 INT, and at both levels 5 and 6. I have the same number of spell points 10@5, then 12@6) whether I have 2 unused boons or 3. If I'm understanding the book correctly, I should have one additional spell point at 5th level when I have 3 unused boons, and the same number of spell points at 6th level whether I have 2 boons or 3 unused.

LonePaladin March 28th, 2016 10:24 PM

Adding it to a clean installation worked. Now I have to see if there were any other add-ons that were essential. I'll let you know if I encounter any problems.

I'll be looking into this tonight.

EDIT: You are correct. With 3 drawbacks (after boons accounted for), you should get 1 extra SP at every odd casting class level. Instead, you're basically getting one at every even level. That wasn't my intent, but it's what's happening.

Good to know!

Got a bug: Eliciter has skillpoints/level set to 0. Double-checked it in the editor, to ensure nothing weird was happening on my end.

In other news, I'm so glad this is finally out!

Thanks, and I've added that to the buglist.

Having a lot of fun messing around with these builds in Hero Lab.
Thanks for the hard work.

+1.

Will you also be working on adding content from the Expanded Options and the various Handbooks?

I happened to ask this on another forum some time ago. Paraphrased answer: "If it is worth it." Followup question was of course: When is it worth it? "I haven't talked about details with Adam."

TheIronGolem March 30th, 2016 09:14 AM

It's not 100% yet, but I will probably be doing Expanded and the Sphere Handbooks. Hopefully, I'll be able to do them fast enough that I can catch up with the Handbooks' release schedule, which would let DDS put out the HL files and PDF's at the same time. Not sure if I'll manage that, but it would be awesome.

First priority, though, is getting out an update that fixes bugs and enables Staves and Wands. No ETA on that right now, but I plan to buckle down this weekend and get as much done as I can.

An Elementalist gets the speed bonus from their Elemental Movement (7th, 13th, and 19th) from level one onwards.

Noted, thank you for catching that.

I'll be putting out an update this week to fix the 1.0 bugs collected so far.

I'll try to reproduce this when I get home, but I don't think any of those things are from SoP. Does the error go away if you turn off SoP as a source?

TheIronGolem April 8th, 2016 08:36 PM

Version 1.1 update is now available!

This is just a bugfix release. I was hoping to include Sphere Staves in this one, but I have not been able to get them working the way I'd like yet. I decided to get a release out to fix the known bugs rather than make you wait until I finished Staves.

pyremius April 10th, 2016 05:44 PM

After installing the 1.1 patch, I receive the following warnings. I did not have any problems with my characters after installing the 1.0 build.

Edit - never mind. I forgot that I also uploaded the latest patches for both hero Lab and Pathfinder. Removing Spheres of Power resulted in no change for my errors - so the problems aren't in your work at all.

BUG
Favored Element (Elementalist Feature)

At 3rd I gain a bonus with one Blast type.
This is working correctly.

At 9th, I gain the bonus with a new Blast type.
The one I chose at 3rd improves correctly.
The new one I choose at 9th, instead of being at 1/2 effect, is also at the full effect.

At 15th, I gain my final Blast type bonus.
The one from 3rd, should again improve to 1 and 1/2 effect (but it remains at 1x effect).
The one from 9th, should improve to 1x effect (it is correct now, but was too good at 9th).
The one from 15th, should be the half effect, but is the full effect.

BUG
Adding Blank Form to a Conjuration

... Blank Form does not change your basic makeup... nor do you lose your abilities, equipment, natural attacks, or any other aspect of your unaltered form...

Adding Blank Form to a conjuration removes it's natural attack (Bite Attack, at +20) and replaces it with Unarmed Strikes (+19/+14/+9).

The creature in question is:
- Conjuration Sphere
- Lingering Companion
- Greater Summoning
- Magical Attacks
- Quick Companion
- Roguish Companion
Companion Race: Small Serpentine

Can you post your .por file, please? And I assume you're on version 1.1?

Problems with Divine Petitioner tradition

I'm playing around with the HL files for SoP. I'm enjoying what i'm seeing so far.

I've created an Incanter5/Armorist 1. Seems to work reasonably well (no errors) until I add the Divine Petitioner Casting tradition. When added, I get a spell pool increase from 11 to 14 (which is correct), but if I try to use those extra three spell pool points for prepared spheres, I get an error. Additionally, the Death sphere is automatically added to my list of options for preparing spell pool points (but no benefits, talents, abilities, etc). Finally, the Aligned Combatant and Aligned Protection drawbacks (when included as part of Divine Petitioner) do not provide extra talents.

Adding the components of Divine Petitioner individually:
- Prepared caster seems to be the drawback that automatically gives the Death sphere.
- Aligned Combatant and Aligned Protection work properly (ie. add talents) when added individually (not part of Divine Petitioner).

[I can send .por file if given instructions.]

Suggestion for future update: Have spell pool automatically reflect points spent in individual spheres for prepared caster.

You know, I had a special tag I had created JUST to prevent Blank Form from removing natural attacks, and I'm certain that it was doing its job. But somehow that tag failed to make it into the release version. Weird. In any case, I've added it back for the next update, coming soon.
