[Shameless Self Promotion] Realm Works Stuff on DrivethruRPG (and Patreon)

Unfortunately the content market did not turn out to be what I wanted it to be: a marketplace for us to buy and offer small drop-in elements for our campaign worlds. Places and maps, NPCs, sidequests, interesting items and the like.

Thus I decided to offer these things myself on DrivethruRPG and for my Patreons of the Advanced Tiers. I don't know if there is even a demand for things like this - apparently LWD did not think so - but it is what I would want, so here goes.

Please have look and tell me what you think. It's not much so far, but I try and add more content regularly:

Would it be possible to post few screenshots from the RW?

Merion March 18th, 2020 05:33 AM

Sure, have a look here:

*edit*
forgot to share a glimpse of a NPC:

I approached them years ago, never heard back.

Really hope this pans out to support RW.

Good stuff, Merion! I saw your Pi Day map over on the ProFantasy forums, and love it. While I don't need any of this right at the moment it's awesome to know it's there.

I've considered doing the same thing, and might still.

Merion March 18th, 2020 02:37 PM

Thanks for the support!

If there is anything particular you would like or you think many GM would like to see, let me know. Right now, it's just a shot in the dark and I'm mainly I putting up things I prepare for my next campaign anyway. More polished and well-rounded than I'd do for myself alone, of course.

I hope nobody minds if I keep this thread updated with new stuff I put up.

This week I added a new NPC and I got a village and another quest in the works.

Well its been since november of last year since I visited and I see things have only progressed further into the abyss....

Wishing you every bit of luck Merion... Hope your endeavor proves a successful support element for the community that LWD couldn't seem to manage.

I'll spread the word and Wave the banner where I can...
Best of luck... and be safe in these trying times across our blue marble as well:)

Thank you for your kind - if gloomy - words!

Thalamus April 4th, 2020 03:13 PM

Bought your Kobolds and Cultists Map and like it. :)

But I had problems while importing. I had to manually edit the File and change the format_version="4" to format_version="3" because RW failed with the error "format_version out of range" (I have the latest Version of RW).

It would be great if you provide some information in the zip which game structure is used for the module.

Some more :-) Based on your name I guess you are german or german speaking. If I am right and you translate your module only for drivethru, it would be great if you considerate to publish a german version too.

Merion April 4th, 2020 03:38 PM

I'm glad you like it! :)

Yes, the bloody problem with the 253 and 255 versions. I think I'll add just both and put a note in.

I am german, indeed. But I create most topic in english these days and translate back on the fly while running my games. Some stuff I do have in german, but these are my personal notes which are immensly less verbose and polished than the english ones. Usually just a bullet points.
I'll think about a german version, but it will double parts of the work and I'm not sure if there's anough demand. My next map will be a little village, maybe I test it there.

You mind some questions about Drivethru and Patreon?

Merion April 7th, 2020 09:30 AM

Of course not, go ahead!

Bloodwolf April 8th, 2020 05:02 AM

How does copyright work with them?

So I have re-worked old adventures and made them 3.5, i.e. I brought the original Temple of Elemental Evil up to 3.5, can you even put them on Drive-thru? Or would I have to put it on Patreon and hope people donate?

For another example, I have created several adventures around an old Goodman Games adventure making it a 6 party series instead of a one off. What would I do with the original adventure and my own creations that use elements from that adventure?

Thanks

I'm fairly sure that reworking somebody else's work is still covered by their copyright.

Phew, that really is more of a law question than platform depended. And of those I know little. Personally, I tend to stay clear of things like that and try to make sure that everything I use that I do not create myself is public domain or under a similar license that allow commercial use.

But I would assume the same as Farling, that you could get in trouble for trying to sell adapted material without consent of the copyright holder.

And by the way, I do have a new item up for sale: Thosch, mainly a village map with minimal lore added.

The term that most likely describes what you're doing is a "derivative work". The safest assumption is that distribution of a derivative work without permission of the original's copyright holder is a violation under US copyright law.

As always, you should talk to your lawyer for actual legal advice before proceeding; we're just random people on the Internet. :)

Those would be derivatives and almost certainly violate copyright. The title might even be trademarked.

Patreon specifically forbids that.

Bloodwolf April 9th, 2020 06:06 AM

OK. So would have to give them away.

So on maybe a more platform based question, I've not messed with either and was wondering the kind of basics on both. How would you say they work?

No idea about DTRPG.

Patreon works pretty simply. You have some work you think people will support. Get an idea for your costs, how you'll release that work (including how frequently), What of it you're willing to give away and what you want to gate to one or more monthly support levels. Then you just create an account, design your page, there is a designer. Then advertise it/your work.

I strongly suggest you have at least some examples available for free at launch. Frequent posts are better than not posting. Showing off works in progress etc. helps greatly.

If you aren't a patron of anyone you might want to do that to see how other creators do things.

Talk to a lawyer first.

"Give them away" can be interpreted as "selling for $0.00".

The owner of the Intellectual Property has ALL rights to determine what you can and cannot do with it. It does not matter whether you charge for it; what matters is that you are using THEIR property in a way THEY did not approve.

Doing anything without talking to a lawyer (and, better, a specialist in Intellectual Property) first is asking to be sued.

Bloodwolf April 9th, 2020 08:49 PM

Fair enough. Thanks

It looks like I'm just going to have to skip the second adventure in my series and rework the first one to take its place. The rest is no more than changing some names. All the rest only referenced the other one for back story.

Will you be updating your files on DriveThru? If not, how does one go about editing the file?

Merion April 11th, 2020 04:06 PM

Yes, I will update them. Or more downgrade the 255 ones to 253, to be precise, because those seem to work for everyone. Will do that sometime tomorrow, can't tell an exact time yet.

With which ones do you have problems?

Quick note: Apparently you can just open the file in a text editor and change the version number in the first line from 4 to 3. Haven't tested it myself though.

Updated files will come this evening at the latest.

Merion April 12th, 2020 04:28 AM

Found time a bit early. All titles that still had .255 files should be updated now. Let me know if I missed something.

Sorry for the triple post, btw. and happy easter!
