There is really no way around it. If new functionality is added in a new version, even a minor version change, and new data files are created and take advantage of those changes, there is no way to make them backwards compatable with an older version as the older version can't use them.

You have two choices. Upgrade or learn to update the files yourself. Unfortunately these are the only options. There's actually a third option and that is to stop using it. Not the best option, but one.

Now does this mean the updates and changes are a devious way to force people to upgrade? Who knows? I surely don't know, but my guts says no, even if I do have some problems with other aspects of the software and the company's policies.

I'm a software developer by profession, and to say its not possible to make it backwards compatible is not true. I cannot believe the datafile structure has changed that much that it is no longer compatible.

Responsibility lies with the developers of Army Builder. If they are going to make breaking changes the should

a) call it version 4.0 or
b) release a patch for 3.1 to be able to read the datafile, even if not using allowing it to take advantage of the new features.

my 5c as a customer...
