Hey. I've been having problems downloading things from within Cardvault. I was hoping it would go away when I finally got 1.1a to dl right, but it just happened again when trying to dl 1.1b. The problem seems to come from when I'm doing anything else at all over the internet. If I'm browsing, checking my mail, ANYTHING while CV is downloading something, I get an error when its finished dling. For the updates, it exited out of CV to install like normal, but then an error message pops up say unexpected file size and that my file size is 13--whatever when its supposed to be 17-whatever. Then when dling datafiles and doing something else, it will completely finish dling and ask if I want to import them now, I say yes, and then it gives me an error that the files must be corrupted and to try again. I may not be using exact terms here, so I hope you understand. Well, if I exit out of everything else I'm doing online and then re-dl the update of files, everything works fine. I'm not sure what the problem is, and I was wondering if you've encountered it before. I have dial-up and dling everything a couple times until it works right is VERY time consuming.

Card Vault uses the standard mechanisms provided within Windows for
downloading files. Specifically, it uses the API provided in the "wininet" DLL. CV is doing absolutely nothing but basic stuff, since it has to work smoothly with both the newest and oldest versions of this DLL (from back in 1995). Do you have any download accelerators installed? If so, that is most likely the source of the problem. Not all sites work correctly in conjunction with the accelerators. We've had a couple of reports of users having problems with downloads due to accelerators. Try disabling the accelerator and trying the download again. To my knowledge, this has always solved the problem for others that have had download issues. Thanks, Rob At 02:36 PM 4/12/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Hey. I have the accelerators disabled by default and only use them when needed. I posted before about accelerators not working with the files in yahoo groups, but this is entirely different. I don't have this problem any other time I download things, accelerated or not. Come to think of it I did have a problem with a rar archive the other day. The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is my antivirus tool. I use Norton's autoprotect now. Could that be causing problems/interfering with the dls?

I have no idea what Norton's autoprotect even does, so I don't know whether
it could be involved. If that's the only thing that has changed, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the culprit. I recommend disabling it and seeing if things work again. My personal experience has been pretty poor with Norton products since shortly after Symantec bought them, so I avoid using their stuff. But that's just my experience and there are lots of folks who use Norton products. Let me know what you come up with.... Okay, I was already planning to test w/o autoprotect on. More off topic: What antivirus tool would you recommend? I don't care for Norton much myself, but am at a lost to find a better alternative.

I use VirusScan from McAfee. The product seems to be technically sound from
all that I've mucked with it. Unfortunately, some moron in marketing decided they should rewrite UI into an utterly pathetic excuse for usability a couple years ago. It looks spiffy compared to a boring Windows application, but it's very clunky to use due to a very stupid design. There may be other good options out there. I stick with VirusScan purely because it seems technically sound (something I don't experience with Norton) and I don't have the time to go evaluating other optoins without a demonstrated need. -Rob At 04:32 PM 4/12/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Okay, I was already planning to test w/o autoprotect on. Okay, thanks. I had already heard bad things about McAfee though. I think there's some Russian antivirus that's supposed to be good, but I don't know the name. Anyway, I'll test with Norton off and get back to you.

What were the bad things you've heard about McAfee? I definitely think the
UI stinks - it would be hard to make it worse. But what about technically? If there are technical issues with it that I haven't uncovered, I'd definitely like to know. :-) -Rob At 04:45 PM 4/12/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Okay, thanks. I don't recall any specific issues of the top of my head. It's been a few years since I was shopping around and kept hearing "Just don't get McAfee" and things like that. I'm not sure if it was just UI problems, or tech issues as well, but I'll be sure to let you know if I find out anything specific.

Try using the slower download... I had the same problem myself.
