Mornin All,

I have had Cardvault for a couple of months now. I was wondering if
it would be possible to add a second target column. Let me give you
the background. I collect and play magic and so does my wife.
Between the two of us, we end up with quite a few extras. Rather
than manage two separate copies of cardvault...it would be easier to
just use a secondary target column. Primary target would be mine
(4) and secondary target (again 4) would be my wife's. Both would
be totalled together to tally the acquire column. This way any new
cards that we buy could be entered at the same time and any extras
that we have between us could immediately be realized. Maybe this
could be offered instead of 3 licenses or however you see fit.

Just a thought,
Jarad

I may be talking out of my considerable backside here, but I'm almost
sure that CV supports multiple databases out of the box, no need for
extra copies or extra licenses. All you have to do is go to the
cardvault directory, copy the directory with the datafiles for the
system you want (MTG) and rename it (MTGwife) and Cardvault will
present that option when you start it, with the other systems.

I think, at least.

At present, Card Vault maintains a single inventory for each game system.
However, as Abilio pointed out, you CAN maintain two different instances of
the game system using a single copy of Card Vault. The easiest way to do
this is during the import process. When the import form appears after
download data files, the data files are placed into a folder designated by
the data file author by default. You can change this folder by clicking on
the "Change..." button and then entering a different folder. By importing
the data files twice and picking an alternate name for the second import,
you'll have two different instances of the same game system on your
computer. Within the list of game systems, you'll then see two different
entries for the duplicated game system, although each will have a different
folder name shown in the righthand column. Both you and your wife can then
maintain your inventories separately, but within the same copy of Card Vault.

Hope this helps,
Rob

P.S. Abilio's suggestion of manually copying the folder and renaming it
will also work, although importing the data files twice can be accomplished
entirely from within Card Vault and may therefore be slightly easier.

Mornin All,

Alas, I had read the FAQ and understood the multiple instances of Cardvault, but I had dreams of opening up only one instance and doing all my card tracking there.
For example, say I buy 10 cards (I have roughly 31,000). I want to see if I need these and/or if my wife needs these. With multiple instances I have to first check mine and then switch over to hers (which is on her user account -WinXP) and then switch back to mine to log the excess cards. This scenario changes depending on who bought what cards. More than likely, either she or myself will migrate to the others account, so that way I won't have to toggle back and forth between accounts. I will still have to toggle back and forth between instances.

My life would just be a lot easier if I could track everything withine one instance. When you define what columns you want (ie. rarity, set, number, artist, etc.) it would be nice if you there were 2 or 3 lines that read "Inventory Target". As that I am not a programmer, I have no idea how difficult that would be to do. Thanks for your suggestions. Keep up the good work. I love the program.

Jarad

Using condition to separate the inventories might work. Your cards are
mint, hers are poor. Just a thought...

What you could do is designate 2 different card qualities to represent
yourself and you wife (eg Fine for your wife and Good for yourself) you
could then batch update Qty Required for each quality to 4, etc.

I'm not sure, however, whether you can show multiple qualities on the
screen at once, nor summarize across qualities (Rob???)

I'm looking to do a similar thing to track my collection vs my play cards.

Hello,

firstly, It was great to meet you guys at GenCon. My fiance and I stopped by on the last day
and though you were exhausted you were still doing a great job selling your product.

Chris (my fiance) and I just recently got into WOW TCG and were really excited that your system
supported it. We bought lots of cards at the con and are both nuts about getting organized and
maintaining said organization. We are both totally cool with sharing cards between us to get decks
going (it helps that we both like different factions and classes). But we both also want to maintain
individual inventories. We are going to do the duplicate game system solution as we both have
different computers. We are then going to keep our own inventory and then a second combo
inventory. In the combo inventory we will import decks (our individual inventories) and then add
the decks to the inventory (deleting the old inventory before we add the new stuff in).

This is a great system and we are really looking forward to using it.

Cheers!

Instead of exporting and importing decks, you can export and import your individual inventories. This will be faster than using decks for the purpose. From the inventory manager's File menu, select Save Inventory XML File to export. Then use the matching Load option to load it in on the joint database. Just be sure to check the option to Increment Current Inventory when loading the second inventory file in.
