You can create Gear Types.
Editor > Equipment > Gear Types But the examples you have provided are not for gear types. You have provided examples of Gear Proficiency. I don't think you can modify these (although i'm probably wrong) as they are rule specific and not really designed for categorising gear. Generally speaking, you *might* be able to do something on the weapons tab to create a new header but I'm not sure what Category/Tag combo would control how you put an item into that group.
You can go to the editor - weapons tab and copy "Simple Melee Weapons" and give it a new title and ID for a "Custom Melee Weapons" group. I *think* it just keys off of Proficiency and Category tags only - I haven't seen where you can dynamically create a weapon category tag, this might be something that can't be created. Any weapon you create that matches the proficiency and category tags of the header you created get put under the new header though.... |

If you want to create a category heading within the Weapons window and collect all your custom weapons within that. That i know how to do. Can provide instructions tonight. It's basically what Dungeon is speaking about above.

To create the category.
Hero Lab Editor > Equipment > Gear Type Create something in here. You need to add a name, unique ID and set your source. Then on the right you need to click the 'Show Only' check box. That will turn it into a non-selectable category. You are now ready to make your weapons or whatever. Hero Lab Editor > Equipment > Wondrous Create it like you do normally. But add a new Tag. Group ID: GearType TagID: Unique ID of Gear Type you made above. This will list the item under the GearType. The weapon categories (ie simple, martial, special) are defined in the skeletal files and can not be added to by users. Sorry!
Just FYI daplunk as soon as you add GearType.? tag to a weapon it causes the weapon to not appear on the Weapons tab at all. I just tested to confirm and even tried the system gear type of GearType.gtWeapon and got the same result. (which is strange cause once a weapon becomes a Pick it gets the tag GearType.gtWeapon added) @Cynder what your asking for should be done using Sources in HL. This allows you to source mark your "custom" weapons to your groups houserules. In example make up a new source called "Cynder Houserules". Then your players can simply search in the Weapons tab with "Cynder" to find all your custom weapons. Hmm I have this working on Wondrous items. I'll test tonight with a weapon and see if I can replicate.
